Differential catastrophic fail

The rear diff on my 109 has become a bit broken.

I have dismissed the idea of soldering over the fractures. ;D
There is damage to every cog except the big one and the one that
is next to the prop shaft end. The bits where the half shafts
come in are ok and so are the shafts themselves.
Is this a complete write off or can it be sent somewhere to be
refurbished? If it needs replaced, how do I identify what it is,
and what models are going to be suitable replacements?
Annoyingly, I just got it through its MOT two days ago after 6
weeks of fixing the cylinder head, distributor, radiator,
brakes, steering, and just about everything other than the
chassis and the axles. One trip later and she's on the back of
an AA truck!

If it's a standard 4.7 diff bud, worry not, they are
two-a-penny. :smilewide:

Hi,
I suppose that saved you a bit of fuel. ..
My S1 Bitza threw a wobbly a few miles before reaching the
Severn Bridge. Rear diff was on fire. I let it burn itself out,
and decided to head for the Aust Services. Creeping down the
hard shoulder, gradually increasing speed, eventually decided I
could finish the journey. The problem was, if I lifted the
accelerator, the pinion screwed itself into the crown-wheel,
making very expensive noises. Solution was to keep right foot on
accelerator, and brake with left foot, until travelling slowly
enough to go into neutral, and let it grumble.
On arriving at my destination, Evran (about 20 miles South of St
Malo), I unhooked the loaded Sankey, pulled both half-shafts,
dropped the rear prop (so there was nothing trying to turn the
diff), engaged 4WD, hooked on the caravan, and returned to Wales
via my daughter's house in Milton Keynes.
Thinking about it now ... perhaps it's lucky that I did not have
the reverse with that floating pinion.
Your steering may feel a bit jerky on tight corners, if only
driving on the front diff.

"and returned to Wales via my daughter's house in Milton
Keynes."
And here was me thinking I was being a bit risky pulling out the
drive shafts to move her across my driveway! 😀

You could replace them with 3.5 diffs, that ups the gear ratio
making it similar to having an overdrive fitted but its in every
gear all the time. The only draw back is you will slightly
quicker in every gear if following another series motor while
offroad or in 1st or 2nd and just using the engine revs.

Ive found some stuff marked on the crown wheel which will
probably help identify what I've got. Does this make it a
standard 4.7 ?

I'm not too sure about changing to another diff for the sake of
changing the speeds. Tootling along at 40-50mph suits me fine as
the brakes are never going to be good enough for anything
faster. However, if it's hard to find a straight replacement
then I'll have to consider other options. I spotted one on eBay
last night for £300 which looked very similar. It was described
as "refurb". Is that likely to be the best I'm going to get?

Hi,
Which button did I click just then?
<<< You could replace them with 3.5 diffs, that ups the gear

Be aware that being stuck with 3.5 diffs can be rather fraught
when you are doing a hill start with a 1000kg trailer on the
hook.
On the other hand, returning to standard diffs after driving
with 3.5s .... yikes, it sounds frantic.
You can change the diff in one axle at a time, but do not go
into 4x4 on tarmac until you have done the other one.
Another problem is the speedo. My S2TD on 3.5s, and big tyres,
was doing 50mph at an indicated 35 .... and it pulled like a
train even with the heavy trailer. It was only hill starts that
caused problems.

Having looked around for a few days I'm beginning to wonder if
I'm looking in the right places. Apart from two on eBay which
were too far away for me to collect, all the rest are between
£300 and £440.
