       RAF Marham

       Hi,
I see RAF Marham is in the news.
In about 1956, me and a mate dressed in our ATC cadet uniform,
and cycled to RAF Kenley, arriving about 06.30. At 08.00, a
Flight Lieutenant told us to sign the book, and get into an Avro
Anson. We were expecting a couple of circuits and bumps, then
       home for breakfast.
An Air Vice Marshall  climbed aboard (probably somebody
       famous in WW2 ???).
He gave us a map, said he wanted to know where we were when we
       landed. "Er .... Kenley?"
A few minutes after take-off, he stood it on one wing, and went
round and round and round, presumably to disorientate us. Wrong!
The wing was pointing straight down at Sanderstead pond, were we
went netting for newts. After that it was easy. He landed at RAF
Marham, told us to look at the aeroplanes, get a meal in the
mess, meet him at 2PM ... and off he went for some G&Ts with his
friends. We visited three aerodromes, before returning to
       Kenley.
I got home about 18.00hrs. An irate mother asked where I had
been. "Kings Lynn!" She didn't pursue the matter.
Do modern kids get opportunities like that?
