       tires

For SIIa: originally tires were cross-ply which were hard
therefore steering lighter. Does it make sense to put on 10 ply
radials to get the stiffness and lighter steering and also a bit
of flexibility of radial tires? Is there any number of plys I
       shouldn’t go over?

I've always found with radials the quoted tyre pressures in the
book feel and look too low. I run Michelin XZY 750R16s on my 2a
hardtop, 14 ply I think. 35psi it seems best with and the
       steering feels light.

wow 14 ply. what i currently have is 5 ply and 3 ply sidewalls
and i usually go 30 psi. does it feel to stiff with 14 ply?

i maybe be naive but i thought the ply rating scaled with load
       rating (i.e target axle weights)

Patrick & I have both got the same on our Carawagons, XZY 14
       ply.
Very hard wearing and almost indestructible - they are designed
for trucks and are supposed to last up to 100k miles.
To say they have a truck type of tread, they aren't bad in the
slippery stuff as both Patrick & I have found - we've never been
stuck on green lanes, snow or the Sahara in soft sand where
other Land Rovers with us have
We run ours at about 35psi, though we're probably topping out at
       over 3 tons!
I noticed a difference in the steering when I went from 6 ply
Avon Rangemasters (also radial at 35psi), but I put it down to
the harder rubber compound rather than the stiffer sidewalls.
Oh, and if you do get a puncture, the tyre almost stays up on
its own due to the stiff sidewalls!
       Cheers,
       Robin.

thanks guys - so 10 ply isn't too bad...

       Hi,
My local scrappie offered me a set of wheels and virtually
unworn tyres, said they were off a VW van but would fit my S2TD.
Not wishing to get him all excited, I didn't ask how much.
Many yonks ago, when cash was tight, I used to buy 750-16 12PR
truck tyres and have them re-cut. Re-cutting was legal due to
the ply rating, but recently Google told me that re-cut tyres
were illegal on vehicles below a certain weight.
I can't remember any problems with the steering ... but I was
young then. Levering them onto the rims by hand was bit of an
effort. One day I had a puncture ... the walls were strong
enough to keep the tyre from going flat at the bottom, but the
valve disappeared into the tyre. I drove home without any drama.
