       Original Spec Tyres
       By: D4B Date: August 26, 2016, 12:10 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
I would like to fit new original spec tyres to my 1981 Series 3
       SWB.
Can anyone confirm the tyre sizes it would have left the factory
with, and if possible the correct rims too?
       Cheers Steve

Assuming short wheelbase rims they would be 6.00 x 16's tyre
size, the rims will be different to 90/defender rims which are
6.50 x 16 tyre size. I think the original tyres would have been
Avon Rangemasters but these are silly money (£200+ a tyre) but
you can get Flamingoes or Deestones for nearer £50 but the tread
       is a different design.

agree 600x16 cross ply tyres were standard, and you could also
have radial 205-80-16s on station wagons. both on 5Jx16 swb
       wheels
however 6.5x16 and 7x16 cross ply were optional from factory on
5Jx16 swb wheels, and also 7.50x16 cross plys on 5.5Jx16 LWB
       wheels.
considering all of the above, and the fact you can get 7.5x16
radials, the world is your oyster !

Thanks for your replies, probably hunt for some Deestones, think
they are now more than £50 each though.

       Thanks all, bought a set of 5 Deestone 6.00 x 16 from a seller
       on ebay.....
They have transformed the steering, so much lighter now!
Should improve further when I get round to rebuilding the front
       swivel hubs.
       Cheers Steve
