my sIIa chassis number is 251........D
i found to buy an engine with engine number starting
906......... but mine's supposed to be 271....... or
       276...........
i'm looking for originality so what should i go for?
and quality wise which is best/most reliable?

If your chassis number is a 251xxxxxD then it was built as a
series IIa 109 2.25 petrol. It's original engine would have been
the low compression 7:1 variant with Solex carb, engine number
beginning 251, 252 or 253. The three engine numbers you have
quoted are diesel, 271 or 276 for a IIa engine and 906 for a
series III engine, none of which your particular 109 would have
       left the factory with.

       thanks for the reply
for the authorities to change to classic registration the engine
must be of the same model but can be eithre diesel or petrol.
Therefore i would prefer diesel for economy and power.
on the other hand having it completely original is appealing.
but my landy has been converted to a station wagon which was not
as it came out of the factory and i absolutely do not want to
       change it backollr
therefore probably the best compromise is to go for the 271/276
       diesel engine
all should be good with the authorities still

       Hi Chris,
All else being equal, the only factor involving changing the Tax
Class, is the YEAR that your vehicle was MANUFACTURED. This will
be shown on your V5, but many will be wrong. The chassis number
indicates the "year" but Land Rover's year started in September.
My Series 2 was registered in May 1960, so DVLA recorded it as
manufactured in 1960, and this was supported by the chassis
number be for the production run.
It actually left the factory on 10th December 1959. There were
hoops to jump through to get MOT Exemption, but nothing onerous
once I knew what was required.
Estate? 3 door? 5 door? 5 door will have meant chassis mods,
which might e a deal breaker.
