Oil Filler

I thought you might be interested in my solution to the problem
of getting EP90 in to all the various appropriate places on the
Series. I have tried various options from squeezy oil bottles,
pump oilcans to proper oil syringes and I usually end up with
oil either running up my arm or all over the garage floor. I was
walking round a farm supplies store recently and saw a Lamb
Reviver.

It is a plastic syringe approx. 6 ins long and an inch in
diameter and will hold 60ml. It comes with a couple of flexible
pipes and is designed for sucking mucous out of the airways of
newborn lambs. It is also very good at topping up gearboxes and
axles without getting in an oily mess! The grading on the side
of the syringe also gives you an idea of how much oil you are
having to replace.
I apologise to the farmers amongst you who have been using them
for years for this very purpose but I thought it might be of
help to the rest of us when carrying out services and checks or
am I the only one who has this problem.

A good tip. Here's how I do it
I buy my EP90 in 25 Litre Drums. To top up the various places
where EP90 leaks from, I put the can on the roof of the LR and
tape a syphon tube into the can. I then start the syphon and put
it into one of the filler/level plug holes. While this is
filling I carry on with the rest of the service/checks etc. A
quick look every few minutes tells me if something is full and
then the hose gets moved to another filling point. Because the
oil is thick it flows slowly so it doesn't end up all over the
floor - if it's too thick (wintertime) and taking too long, keep
the oil in the house the night before to speed things up a bit.

nice idea with the syringe. we know the rough target capacity
of the boxes so allows you to creep up on it, before it starts
spewing out the hole.

If you are too embarrassed to go to a farm store and ask for a
cow inseminator, I have been using a 'Hopkins MixMizer
injector' for adding EP90.
It looks to be a very similar device (syringe & extension tube)
and was fairly cheap from a local motor shop. It's main use is
for measuring two-stroke oil, but works very well on landrovers.

they all seem to be around 60ml, which will take some patience !
great for topping up though
