Symptoms of blocked slow running jet

I suspect the slow running jet might be blocked on my zenith
carb. The vehicle runs very nicely with plenty of power, but at
idle it revs high and then low alternately, on a 2 second cycle.
I have had to set the idle very fast to try to stop it stalling
when it goes low. With more than 50% throttle applied the
tickover is smooth. I originally thought it might be a mixture
problem but during a recent fuel pump problem I chucked some
petrol into the carb and realised afterwards it was probably
pretty old so now I fear a blockage in the carb. Any
opinions/advice please!

There is a rubber 'O' ring in a Zenith 36IV that often perishes
and causes poor running, I had one go on one of mine - can't
swear to it but I think the fault manifests itself worst at
idle.

Thanks Noel, I had a closer look last night and noticed a slight
exhaust fume leak. I had trouble mating the inlet manifold to
the exhaust manifold when I swapped the head recently so I am
wondering if I have exhaust going into the inlet, I think this
might explain the cycling between revs at idle and that it works
fine with some throttle on, I will have a look at this first,
cheers.
