Manifold gasket replacement
By: kiwi s3 Date: July 14, 2016, 1:16 am

Hi everyone,
A couple of months ago, the manifold gasket on my petrol S3
failed - with a bit of the gasket poking out from around the
exhaust of #1 cylinder. This made it a bit noisier, but it still
drove OK, I have got a new 1 piece gasket, but not got around to
fitting it yet.
Starting the landrover up on Tuesday morning, I only got about
100 meters before it lost power, started mis-firing, followed by
a few loud backfires. Managed to get it back to the driveway
and left it there.
I'm hoping the two issue are related, with the inlet part of the
gasket now also failed - causing an air leak and weak mixture.
Does this sound likely or do I need to fix two problems
tomorrow?
Any tips or tricks to be mindful off when changing the gasket?
Cheers,
Mark,
Wellington, NZ.

if you didnt have a one piece gasket before, you will now have a
missmatch of depth on the manifold mating flanges
so then you have the secondary issue of the manifolds being
solidly bolted together, if you slacken them so everything bolts
up square you disturb the composite hotspot gasket, then if you
disturb that its worth replacing the gasket and making sure both
surfaces (between inlet and exhaust manifold) are ship shape and
square.
usual domino thing
