specific landrover identity required
By: mark-h Date: July 8, 2016, 3:19 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
HI all I now have a series 2a. and I need some help confirming
exactly what spec it is.
This is to enable me to order the correct parts i need, such as
brake items.
So if anybody can confirm if there are any significant
differences when ordering parts that would be great.
its a June registered 1965 series 2a petrol. no seatbelts fitted
or evidence of any factory mountings, should it have seatbelts
if its 1965? it has a push button start, ignition is missing but
has a large hole so im assuming it would have had a light
switch/ignition originally.
It also has smaller wheel studs than my series 3 had, and its
missing a few of them. so what would I search for to find the
correct items. series 1?
Would i be better searching for series 2 items when ordering
spares?
Its been off the road since 1999. will have its first 21st
century mot by the winter ive set myself 4 months to
recommission it. although i do need a new bulkhead.
thanks in advance, I hope Ive explained it well enough.

Pegasus Parts and others etc differentiate axle parts between
early series 2 and later series 2 and 3, so that could explain
the stud difference, sounds like yours is an earlier type?

so when i see an advert on ebay for brake drums, listed for a 2
2a and 3 its likely they are wrong.
If i order for an early series 2 then ill porbably have the
correct items. thanks

The best thing you can do is to get hold of a parts book, or a
cheap pdf scan version on a disk! This will a) tell you what
should be there down to every nut bolt and washer and b) gives
change points for parts.
If studs are missing, you need the pull in version rather than
the screw in as they will stay in place - these are quite cheap
and are available in the early 9/16 BSF thread. Usually it is
just necessary to file away and thread in the hub, then use a
wheel nut and some form of spacer to wind them in from behind.
You need to take off the brake drum, but not the hub. I have
used the ring end of a combination spanner as a spacer.

Your bulkhead is still of the earlier type with the separate
lower panel and round heater, but the variant with lever vents
rather than screw vents. I assume it is much worse than it looks
in the photos?
I would fit seatbelts as you don't want to hit the wiper motors
in the event of an accident, not to mention a lot of parcel
shelves on bulkheads have knee prints in them!

thanks for that info very useful I will do as you suggested with
regards to the wheel studs.
The bulkhead could be saved with a lot of work. strangely the
lower part including the footwells are excellent its the upper
part of the bulkhead that has rotted away behind the steering
column and the out part below the vents. I will do it if I have
to but if i could find a decent alternative even if it needs
footwells id rather do footwells than most of the top of the
bulkhead.
Id like to fit seats belts to be honest, i need the mountings
aswell. probably be easier to find a complete seatbelt setup
from a series 3.
do you know anyone who supplies the wheel studs you mentioned?

The link is to Craddocks - you can get them on e-bay and other
suppliers, just search for the part number. I eventually
replaced all the wheel studs with the pull in type and never
have any problems with them.
Repairing the top half of the bulkhead is not so easy as you
can't proper repair panels and they are a complicated shape to
make by hand.

seems i have no choice but to try and repair the bulkhead.
either that or fit a series 3 bulkhead.
would these be the wheel stud replacements?

Yes, just 4 times the price of Craddocks (but free postage)! If
the studs are missing you will need the nuts as well I assume?

Series 2A models are more easily identified exactly thanks to
the chassis number suffix letter. I'm going to guess your
chassis number ends with a 'B' as you have a wire spoked
steering wheel, 'C' onwards got the wheel that carried right
through to the end of series 3 production. Despite being
registered in June '65 it's likely to have been built a bit
earlier hence the lack of seat belts. As has been said a parts
catalogue will be invaluable.
It's horses for courses but that looks like a quite un-fucked
about with series 2a. A series 3 bulkhead would ruin it IMHO.
There are plenty of options, Ashtree can repair just about
anything.
