Fuel pump weirdness
By: pintofale Date: June 26, 2016, 3:30 pm

Bit of weirdness with my 1959 S2 2286 petrol...
I fitted a new fuel pump about a year ago, it was a Shitpart one
from Paddock.
Then recently I had to fit a new cylinder head, which went fine,
and the old girl fired up again afterwards.
I had some other bits to do so some time passed - when I came
back to it I had a fuel problem and it wouldn't start. There
was no fuel coming through, and the pump felt like it wasn't
producing pressure when I tried to prime it.
I replaced the pump again - this time with a Bearmach one from
Paddock, although it looked pretty much the same.
Once fitted I primed it and got fuel through. I started the
engine and it ran, then cut out. No fuel again. Tried priming
again and it didn't feel like there was enough resistance.
Sucked on the inlet, mouth full of petrol (not recommended). So
it seems like the pump was ok, but starting the engine broke it
somehow. Maybe this also happened to the old one - although it
was fine with the old cylinder head. But the cylinder head
shouldn't make any difference!
Does any of this make any sense to anyone - it could just be a
coincidence that two pumps has failed early doors but I am
reluctant to buy and fit another one without understanding
what's happening. Any advice much appreciated!

Any comments on the sensibleness or otherwise of an electric
pump, and/or recommended parts? One advantage would be really
easy to swap in a spare if it packs up out on the road!

Fuel cap air vents - fuel pick up to tank pump arm worn or cam
on shaft worn and so on.??

Remove the fuel filling cap.
Unbolt the fuel pump from the block leaving the fuel lines
attached.
If you activate the priming lever in this position you should be
able to pump fuel to the carburettor.
If you can pump fuel the fault is with the cam lobe and or the
pump actuating arm.
If not look further back along the fuel line towards the tank.
Look for air leaks (loose connections, holes blockages etc).
Remove the fuel pick up from the tank and check as above.
If all this fails fit an electric pump.
This is what I ended up doing but my problem was fuel
vaporisation.
Good luck

Ok, thanks. Anyone recommend a suitable electric pump?
Presumably it has to generate roughly the same pressure, so it
provides enough fuel but not too high that the float chamber
can't back it off. Range rover one maybe?

Anyone tried this one from Paddock?

I've used pumps like that before, and they work fine. That seems
like a good price, Facet pumps are normally a good deal dearer
than that. I'd still be trying to get to the bottom of the
mechanical pump issue though, myself. Have you stripped one of
the failed ones down to see if there's any debris holding one of
the poppet valves open?

Ok, thanks, I am going to get an electric for the time being but
I will also go back and look at the mechanical pump as I want to
know what's happening.
But if the electric one works and is not too noisy I am going to
leave it in place because I still think it's going to be more
reliable in that I can swap for a spare in 5 mins at the side of
the road, whereas with the mechanical one even if I carry a
spare it's a lot more of a ball ache to swap out if I am
stranded somewhere.

the only non topical thing i can think of is the glass fuel bowl
(if it has one) this has a rubber seal at the top, if that's
not sealing the pump will just pump air
p.s that facet ticker pump are standard LR item on petrol coil
sprung models (maybe even the stage1)

Well the funny thing is that with the Bearmach on it did pump
with the manual handle, I felt the resistance increase as the
petrol came through and the filter jar filled up, and I heard
the carb float chamber filling, and sure enough it fired up.
But then it conked out, and when I tried to prime it again I
felt no resistance, so it seems like the engine broke the
filter. I did wonder if I had the filter misaligned and the
lever is on the wrong side of the cam, but then I don't think it
would have hand primed. I've ordered the electric one to get me
back on the road, but I will have a look at the mechanical one
as I really want to understand what's going on (as all land
rover owners must!)
