S3 petrol running issues
By: CountyDorset Date: June 10, 2016, 4:12 am

Having recently replaced all the ignition components (and adding
electronic ignition),my S3 ran well.
Now however it's a pig that doesn't idle unless the choke is on
- if not it idles until it stalls. It runs mega rich (but then
that it with choke out).
Another 'quirk' is when I start it up it runs ok, then stalls
after
5 seconds - this seems to be consisent...
The carb is the Weber 34ICH - should i get it refurbed/replaced?

sounds like blocked jets or air corrector. its very simple job
to split the carb into halves and air line out the passages

sounds right - will take a look!

If you search through the forum you'll find several posts on
carbs, find yourself a decent Zenith 36IV as your series 3
should have and you'll notice a big improvement. I find the best
use for a Weber 34ICH is a door stop.

As above ^ bin the p.o.s. Weber and get a Zenith, these are easy
to refurb yourself too, the top and bottom halves often need
rubbing down flat to get rid of the classic 'warp', I've created
numerous 'good' ones out of odds and sods... :toothless:

I presume original and not new Zenith? Or are they ok?

There is a Zenith 36IV EP (extra pefromance) with electronic cut
off valve for sale. Will this work/benefit my engine?

Some Zeniths do suffer from warping, although that's easily
cured. As for the pattern Zeniths I can't really comment as I've
never used one, there were some pretty poor ones around a few
years ago but I'd think you'd be safe with a non-Britpart carb
from a reputable brand such as Bearmach. Overhauling an original
is pretty easy too. I can see the EP variant you're looking at,
I've never seen one before. My gut feeling is you'd be best
sticking with a 36IV spec'd for a series 3.

mines had a 34ICH since 1998, 40,000 miles. i've personally put
3000 miles on the engine using it as a daily driver, around
town, for the last year and half.
call me extreme if you like, but it runs great on the weber.
its had symptoms once like the original post in my ownership
which i fixed in my lunch break for free without buying a
fantastic 36IV, which are so renowned for being completely
reliable and no running issues what so ever compared to a weber
that everyone tells you to deck them on some glass and sand
paper before fitting. ;-)
