Another steering issue
By: Stephan Date: May 29, 2016, 1:49 pm

Hello together,
I own a series 3 109 station diesel (1982) (my first series
after a Defender). My problem is the steering. Is it normal that
the steering wheel doesn`t return to normal
by its own after driving around the corner. The phenomenon is
independend from the speed. I have to crank back the Wheel after
each corner. Driving overland the steering feels good for a non
power assisted steering system (I think so). Is this the normal
behaviour or is something wrong?
Thanks for many answers and tips!
Greetings Stephan!!

Welcome along Stephan. The normal checks are, Is there oil in
the relay ? remove two screws one to add the oil the other to
allow the air to bleed, it takes a while to get oil in there. Is
the steering box oil level OK ? Make sure the steering box is
not over adjusted. As I said on the other steering issue post,
remove a rod end from the swivels and check they are not over
tight. Around 12 to 14 pounds pull with the seal in situ will be
OK

What springs are fitted and what size tyres?

Hello I´ve installed Bridgestone DUELER A/T 694 75R16 operated
with 2.5 bar pressure (front axle). Today I brought the car to a
gearbox specialist for fixing some leakages at the main gear box
and the overdrive. He suspected problems with the adjustment of
the steering. I am scarred about a expensive steering box
replacement. But this is very probable because I found the
gearbox without oil from the previous owner and I don´t know how
Long it was droven without oil. The oil level of the relay was
ok.
Thanks for answering and many greetings from Bavaria!!

To answer your question Stephan, the steering on a series should
self-centre as per any other vehicle. In my experience it is
very ususual for the fault to be caused by the steering box
unless it has been over-adjusted. It is far more likely to be
one of the other components seizing up such as the kingpins
(swivel pins) or steering relay.
Assuming the tracking (toe in) of the steering has been checked
and the steering box adjustment is OK I would begin by isolating
the components and diagnosing one by one. As it is perhaps the
easiest thing to do and arguably the most common culprit I would
check the swivel pre-load. This is detailed in the manual,
basically disconnect the track rod and drag link from the
steering arms at the swivels, drain the oil and remove the oil
seal retaining ring and oil seal and check with a spring
balance. To be honest it'll probably become evident if this is
the cause when you disconnect the track rod/drag link and try by
hand.

2.5 bar is a bit high try 2 bar or slightly less we would
normally run tyres at 25psi to 30psi , 29psi would be 2 bar.

Hello, I think I can circle the Problem now. I checked out both
swivel pin housings and found a thinny grease with the smell of
EP 90. In my submission
somebody tried to "repair" leaking houses on his own way. Í will
reseal the swivels put EP 90 in and than I will see what
happens. With your tips I´m very optimistic to find a satisfying
solution.
Thanks!!

Hello, so I´ll leave the swivel housings like they are and
concentrate upon the gear. Because today I saw the internal
parts of the main gear with a fractured main shaft! But
wondering it was driving only the second gear was jumping out
during force changes. Now I´ve reached the turning point from
more or less good to project. But nevertheless I was prepared for
this moment and saved money before purchasing the car.
Greetings and I will keep You updated!!
