Steering Woes
By: D4B Date: May 24, 2016, 1:06 pm

Now that my series 3 is back on the road, I am finding that I
really do have to "fight" with the steering....
It's extremely heavy, and on tight slow manouvering turns it
kind of bumps, like you have just run over a rock!
I have since filled the new steering relay with oil (slight
oversight on my part :rolleye0012:) but this hasn't improved
things much...
Having never driven another series Land Rover, I don't know what
it should be like.
When I was reversing out today, I noticed the front wheels sat a
bit odd:

Could part of it be these mis shaped G90 tyres?
I do need to disconnect the steering relay and check it has the
correct amount of resistance...........
Any thoughts?
Thanks Steve

By "tight, slow maneuvering turns" do you mean the steering
kicks on full lock? If so then it might be worth checking it
isn't stuck in 4WD (jack up a front wheel and it should spin
freely, if it doesn't - provided the brakes aren't binding -
then your front axle is engaged).

my front wheels have a bit of positive camber like that.
how much oil did you put in the relay? i found mine very slow
to consume, like it appeared brimmed but then dropped at snails
pace
other thoughts, over adjusted steering box, railco seizing,

Thanks for your replies.
Doug T: Perhaps it is the steering "kicking on full lock" ? I
will check if it's stuck in 4WD and report back.........
Darren H: I managed to get almost 2 x Bluemels oil cans full of
EP90 into it, took ages though.
Railco Bushes, the swivels housings are something I haven't
investigated as yet, they are on my to do list though as one
side the seal is leaking.

I would disconnect the drag link off the bottom steering relay
arm, then remove the top link so you can turn the relay by
pulling on the bottom are. You should have about 15lb- 20lb of
pull on the end of the arm before it moves, or require a
reasonable but not lots of effort to pull it with one hand.
You mention it is a new relay, is it Britpart? If so mine did
not have anyway for the oil to get into the relay due to a
casting defect so it was very tight and quickly seized.
Have you replaced or touched the swivel hubs? It could be you
need more shims in the Railko bush, about 8lb of force to turn
one (without the seal in place).
I think the camber is a red herring (although it does look odd,
it could be angle of the picture), the less contact the tyre has
the easier it should be to turn.

Been a while since I've had my chrome swivels off, but would it
be possible to fit them upside down?

Yes it is a Britpart steering relay, got plenty of oil into it
so hopefully my oilways are ok.....
I will disconnect the arms from the relay and use a spring
balance to see if it's within spec.
I have just borrowed some nice old Dunlop tracking guages, so
will be having a play over the weekend, will let you know how I
get on.
Cheers Steve
PS: I haven't touched the swivels or railco bushes as yet.

Easy enough to disconnect a track rod end and have a tug on the
swivels. Have you messed with the steering box adjustment ?
Check also that the steering box and it's bracketry is tightened
to the chassis they can come loose and course steering wander
and a bit of a knock.

Small update, tracking is now much improved after using the
Dunlop Guages, but steering still heavy and a little odd at full
lock......
Will report back after checking out relay and steering box
again.
