Rear axle propshaft oil seal
By: ProDave Date: May 23, 2016, 4:34 pm

Not used the Landrover for several weeks, but due to a fault in
my daily transport I have been using the Landy this week.
So I do a 25 mile round journey and when I stop I smell oil. Not
engine oil, but gear oil. A quick look underneath and it's
coming from the rear axle propshaft seal.
No time to do anything but next day I had to go out again, only
6 miles amd this time not a drop of oil leaking.
So has the seal expanded and sealed again, or is my axle empty?
It looks like a simple job to change it, I just don't have any
time for anything at the moment.

It is unlikely to have expanded, could be that you were parked
facing slightly up hill when you noticed it had stopped? Easy
job to do, can be done in a morning and it was the first job I
did when I bought mine and amazingly 12 years on the Britpart
seal shows no sign of leaking. Hardest part is getting the drive
flange unbolted as it should be a tight fit on the pinion,
sometimes these can be worn so leak even with a new seal.

Thanks D4B That makes it look easy.
As with all these things, it will be easy if the bolts undo, but
if they are rusted in with round heads........
One question, I am doing this in the vehicle as a repair. If I
unbolt the propshaft from the axle, can I just move it out of
thw way, or will I have to unbolt both ends and remove it
completely?

You should be ok to move it out of the way, it slides in and out
so that helps too 8)
