       Odd engine performamce

After fitting a new (4000kms) engine to my 1970 S2a station
wagon ( funny the things you can find here in South Africa) It
performed very well until a blockage at the carb, cleaned this
out and it seemed ok. Now it will not pull the skin of a rice
pudding, checked the fuel flow, inition system, air filter etc
but no improvement. If I remove the vacum pipe from the brakes
the engine speeds up and revs freely. Should'nt it slow down
when I do this. This is a 6 cylinder land rover engine with a
SU carb. Any advice will be apreciated

       Any smoke in the exhaust?
When you say "remove the vacuum pipe", are you disconnecting it
and plugging the hole in the manifold, or leaving it open?
If you're plugging it, it points to the servo diaphragm having
failed and letting in air. If you're not plugging it, it points
to the air cleaner/pipework being blocked and preventing the
engine breathing; disconnecting the pipe thus allowing air into
       the engine.

Have you checked the dashpot in the top of the carb still has
oil in it and can move up and down freely?
