Painting with a brush
By: pintofale Date: April 16, 2016, 11:24 am

My hard top has been painted with a brush (with enamel paint
from Paddock) and it's not best. I was going to try improving on
it, anyone got tips for getting good results with a brush, or
should I give up on the idea and get it sprayed?

use a foam roller 4" flavour and then go over it very lightly
with a dry brush to pop the bubbles left from the roller and
that gives a very good finish.

It depends what level of finish you want and how long you want
it to last. I've always been disappointed with the results of
using a brush, roller etc so have favoured the spraygun for some
years now. 2 pack paint lasts far longer, the modern synthetic
single pack finishes aren't much cop really. They look nice for
a while but it doesn't last. I'm self taught, after a bit of
practice it's not hard to spray 2 pack solid colours on a
series. Alternatively if you do the prep work I doubt a bodyshop
would want vast sums to fire a coat on for you, it's easy to
mask off to spray a roof and the labour is in the prep.

assuming the coverage is good with your current paint, it could
be flatted back with some wet 800-1000 paper to take the strokes
out, then wet 1500 and a cut polish.

Thanks for the tips.
DarrenH, this is enamel paint straight from the tin, do you
reckon it will rub down ok? And t-cut? I didn't think that
would work like it does on acrylic. But I will give it a crack!

Hi - I brush painted mine with okay results. I found Stephen
Hull's website invaluable.

o
I used Tekaloid enamel which has the advantage of requiring very
little masking out. You can do a panel at a time.
Cheers - Matt

Thanks. Darren, I am impressed with your results there, I will
get some wet+dry and give it a go over followed by the t-cut.
