Series III LWB Military Petrol Fuel Tank and repairs
By: Series3pickup Date: March 29, 2016, 4:26 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Hello. My passenger side fuel tank is leaking down the seam.
I imagine that all roads lead to tank replacement but they are
about £200!!
So far I have used a Granville Petro Patch - didn't work
Wickes chemical metal equivalent - I may as well have used
blutack
So.. I went to Halfords and got Araldite repair putty. Siphoned
out as much petrol as I could. Tastes horrible.
Jacked up the Land Rover on one side, to tip the remaining
petrol away. Dried the area with my hair dryer and applied the
Araldite.
I am going to put the petrol back tonight, giving the Araldite
as much chance as possible to set.

Other than getting aviation standard sealant at mega money. Are
there known successes for repairing fuel tank seams without
removing the tank?
Thanks a lot

This is the stuff you want, and it works if you follow the
instructions, i have seen it used it and the tank leaked like a
sieve before hand, it was couple of years since it was done and
its still leak proof now.

You may find it cheaper if you look around.

Can vouch for the POR15 kit, used it in a grey fergie tank about
nine years ago, no leaks and still looks like it did the day it
was done.

in my experience it rusts between the stone shield and the fuel
tank.
the pour in remedies do work well. long term solution slice the
stone shield off and repair it properly, or just buy a new tank

Thanks for the advice. I am going with a new tank. But I will
take this one off and repair as advised. Then I can replace the
driver's side one.
Thanks again

You could always save yourself some money by getting a (cheaper)
civilian pattern tank, letting the military filler into the top
and cutting off / blanking the civilian filler and breather
pipes.

I fitted a new tank. Has to be the easiest petrol tank swap
ever.
Did one for a Metro some tears ago - disconnect rear brakes,
drop rear subframe, disconnect fuel lines, fight with removing
fuel filler, fight with removing old tank. then get to put it
all back. Not fun.
LR tank renewal - disconnect a few things, support tank with
jack, lower down, raise new tank on jack, reconnect a few
things, fasten in.
With the new rubber gasket, the fuel cap is a bit tight but I
expect this will free off with wear.
NB I do have a spare civilian petrol tank but swapping the
fillers around is more than my skill set. So far anyhow.
Thanks for all the replies.
