stiff steering relay
By: PROPERJOB Date: March 27, 2016, 3:42 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Apologies for another thread asking for advice; but having read
on other threads on Britpart steering relay failures I am
somewhat worried about a potential problem with mine. At the
moment my Landy is stripped down to the chassis, with everything
"upstream" of the steering relay removed. I needed to turn the
wheels from lock to lock today and with the wheels jacked up I
could barely change the direction of the steering, the mechanism
was that stiff. Is that normal? I am worried the steering relay
has started to seize even though last time I drove it the
steering was easy enough to turn.
Many Thanks

Not normal at all, you should be able to turn them with very
little effort, an easy way to see if its the relay is drop the
arm off the bottom of it and if the wheels turn freely then the
relay is the problem.

Thanks Dave, that is what I was expecting, will drop the bottom
arm off and see how I get on.

The relay has shims to pre load it ,manual states 15 to 27lb
using a spring balance on top lever eye.
You also should have 8-10lbs on each swivel housing .

Thanks for the tips both, I split the ball joint from the drop
arm and sure enough no problems moving the wheels but the relay
was stuck solid, even exerting force way beyond the 27lb pull.
The only positive was when I put the relay in the chassis I
smothered both the relay and the chassis in grease so removal
was dead easy. I need to decide if to replace the relay or
rebuild with a new shaft and bushes as I don't trust the
existing shaft having read some of the other posts about them
snapping

I rebuilt mine awhile ago but shaft was pitted on lower oil seal
section so refitted it opposite way round still leaks out the
top so bought a new shaft from this supplier.
He states that they are Santana manufactured , I have tried my
automatic centre pop on top surface and steel seems compatible
hardness , will get around to changing it this summer.

Later shafts had renewable seal lands which are a press fit.
Mine was the single piece shaft and was also pitted. I had it
skimmed in work on a lathe to accept the seal lands and been
good ever since

Thanks both, going to go down the rebuild route I think with the
new shaft, it is not too bad at that price. I found a good
thread in the technical archive so other than not getting maimed
by the internal spring it seems straightforward.

I knocked my spring out into a pillow case

Sam do you know the part number for the later seal lands?
Could be interested in obtaining them.
