To port, or not to port

Is it worth getting a ported head from the likes of Turners or
ACR when changing to an unleaded head? Does anyone have
experience of using these companies?
Turners seems to be the more expensive of the two..

I have used Turners on numerous occasions. Their service is
second to none IMHO, and that doesn't come cheap. I always got
the impression that they do a thorough job, with no corners cut,
and add a reasonable profit margin, rather than do the same job
as everyone else and whack a bit more on top for their name.

I fitted my Turner head just short of 20 years ago now. It was
ported and unleaded and makes a noticeable difference to the
performance. (Just a shame the rest of the engine is about
knackered now though!)

short answer is yes. i had an ACR on my previous vehicle (2.3
petrol 1984 ninety) and it increased power from 70 to 85bhp,
had equal or greater torque over the entire rev range too
modern 2.2 16v engines will pump out 150bhp and 150lbs of torque
all day long. land rover makes 70bhp and 120lbs of torque.
torque is directly proportional to how well you can fill the
cylinders with air, modifying the cylinder head will improve
cylinder filling.

Yes, I can vouch for ported heads too. I run a couple of Turner
heads and an ACR. Turner 8:1 stage one is what I'd spend my
money on.
