To rebuild or to buy? Opinions please.

       ---------------------------------------------------------
       Hello again.
Still working on the list of landy jobs to do. Now I find my
attention focused on the smokey startup.
She smokes to buggery when first started, but only after being
stood for a while (overnight usually). Not a major issue as it's
all cleared up by the time I get to third gear. This happens
before I reach any neighbouring properties, so no worries there.
I suspect valve stem seals have gone hard and brittle due to age
and so little use. Probably there will be wear in the valve
stems and guides as well. So question is do I rebuild the
original cylinder head, or go for a turner engineered
       replacement?
Currently it's an 8:1 head. If I go the turner route, I could
maybe go for 9:1 and gas flowed. Also will have the advantage of
hardened valve seats, but I don't buy into the badness of normal
seats. If I rebuild, it would remain the original, and be
       cheaper, less than £100.
I do not want to just change the valve seals, if I got to get
the head off, I only wanna do it once. So if the head is coming
off, it will have new valves, guides and seats re-cut at the
       least.
       Thanks.

I fitted a Turner 8:1 unleaded head 10 years ago and it has been
great. They don't recommend the 9:1 for everyday use, can't
remember the exact reason. I chose the turner route as I wasn't
comfortable in my abilities to recut all the valve seats etc and
old head wasn't set up for unleaded. I have no idea how much
Turner charge now but at the time it wasn't eye watering so
       worth a call to them

I think it's ACR who provide a raised compression head. Turners
       just gasflow.

It's a question I've been wrangling with myself - in the end
I've decided to at least have a go at rebuilding (thus keeping
things original), even though I've never done so before. There
was a nice article in the latest issue of either LRO or LRM
(possibly CLR, I get terribly confused) about rebuilding the
2.25 petrol cylinder head and it doesn't seem too difficult.
Besides, if I f*ck it up I can still then hand a wad of notes to
       Turners...!

I saw that article, I thought it was a bit of a con to be
honest, I would have said it was more a clean and renew seals
rather than a rebuild. To me, rebuilding a head means replacing
valves and valve guides and recutting the seats at least. I
generally do some work around the ports as well, to improve the
gas flow, but that's not strictly needed I guess.
If there is wear in the valve guides and valve stems allowing
them to wobble about a bit, even new seals won't stop the oil.
In fact, if the stems and guides are accurately made and not
worn, you don't even need the stem seals. I have triumphs that
don't use rubber seals on the valves.
In the past, I would not have contemplated handing over money
for something I could do myself, but I went and did the family
thing and now find myself with hardly any time for such things.
But I would like to keep her as original as possible.

i fitted an acr stage 2.1, 9:1cr on my ninety (very early 2.3
petrol version) it improved torque over the entire rev range
       and power increased to 85bhp.

Are you running standard fueling and exhaust with that? I don't
want to stray too far from standard with it.
If I was going to go for that I would have to buy it outright
and keep the standard head. I only like mods that can easily be
reversed. She is very unmolested and I want to keep her that was
as much as possible. I think at the moment I am swaying toward
rebuilding the original head, or maybe a service exchange 8:1
head. I like the idea of more power, but that's not what the
landy is for. If I want to go fast I will get on a motorbike or
take the stag out. The landy is just for plodding about and
enjoying life at a slower pace.

oh you're one of those, land rover have got it all wrong with
the ford duratorq engine having 266lbs of torque, when 120 is
       enough :smilewide:
       originality, i'm digging that

Not at all. I think the duratorq is a very nice engine indeed,
and very well suited for the defender. But if I wanted that, I
would have a defender. I'm just very much into the old classics.
My 'sensible' car, for ferrying the family about does indeed
have a duratorq engine, very punchy and still economical. My
wife drives a freelander2 with the td4 lump in it.
For me, the fun is not all power, the fun is seeing a nice old
vehicle wearing it's history with pride. I also find it quite
calming to slow down and enjoy life in the slow lane from time
       to time.
