circuit tester with voltage reading? - Recommendations

I am struggling to get the brake lights to work on my 77 series
3, so the brake switch is on the pedal,
already tried testing the circuit by connecting the two made
connectors together that attach to the switch to se if the
       lights work.... Nope....
so think its time to get myself a circuit tester & volt meter -
Any suggestions of a good little tester?
       thanks as always

I've a Gunson multimeter, didn't cost a lot, served me well for
       about twenty years.

Got a Maplin one that seems OK, it has a "hold" function which
is very useful for those times when you need to put the meter in
place and then go and flick the ignition / operate a switch.

I am an electronic design engineer by trade, so I have all manor
of measuring and recording instruments, meters, scopes etc at my
disposal. But the one tool I always reach for when doing
anything electrical on any of my classics is one of these:

I'm a bit old school, can't beat a test bulb, will give 'real
world results'. A digital/led tester might show 12v but once a
proper load is applied, high resistance joins etc can really
       affect the circuit and current.
