Newbee thoughts on Tyre Wheel options - save my brain from overl
oading...
By: TallBeeLandy Date: February 9, 2016, 3:09 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
so i have my trusty series 3 88" petrol - standard. i mainly
drive 60% on road & prefer a standard ish look rather than big
brash white lettering on my tyres..
i have ditched a set of 8 spokes currently on eBay. they had
enduro Runway tyres 235/75/15 so rather small & wide for a
Series in my opinion?
so whats hurting my brain is the following options....
MOT is Looming and i am thinking the original, swb Rims with
Security type tyres that i sourced won't pass - good tread but
cracked places.
So....
I have also acquired in the last 12 months.... Dont ask!
5 x new Tubless Defender tyre Rims. 5.5" wide - no Tyres.
5 x ANR1534 Rims - no tyres
Any suggestions on what i go for....
i like the idea of the ANR1534's with something good on the road
and occasional mud wandering. will they look daft being so wide?
they must sit outside the wheel arches?
or should i go with the modern defender rims with something
tubeless.
my head hurts.....

I have 7.50 R16s on tubeless wolf rims. this size looks good on
an 88" as it fills the arches slightly
In my opinion, Defender steel rims look decent enough like a
series rim with the added benefit of being tubeless, making for
a bigger choice in tyres. 130 rims look the best.
Ive got an all terrain pattern on mine, you can see the tread
pattern here

Gives decent performance on road, plenty of grip in the wet and
reasonably quiet, not had a chance to test off road yet

I dont know the codes sorry, only know them as being off a 130,
but they're the ones with more of a deep dish
Yes Event tyres, they're the same tread as the old Colway ATs I
used to have.
Cheers, its a lot further ahead than that photo but was the best
one I had that showed the tread

ANR1534 sit about flush with the bodywork, the offset and extra
1.5 inches width push it out a fair way. admittedly this alters
the traditional "narrow track wheels tucked under the body" look
of a series 3, and will get debris up the side of the truck.
standard swb steel wheels are 5 inch wide and if you were to
stick to the book, are too narrow for anything but 205-80 or
600x16 originals. debender steels however, same width as LWB
series wheels, open up the 750 and metric equivalents, plus can
go tubeless if they are later.
on a genuine note, if you end up not using the ANR1534 and fancy
selling i've been quietly looking for a set...

Actually the ANR1534 rims have no difference in offset from the
last LWB ones (6.5Jx16x33 against 5.5Jx16x33) the only
difference in size being the extra 1.5 inches on the "outside"
rim - in other words the inside edge of the tyre is in the same
place (so no extra steering lock etc). That 1.5 inches is also
not enough to bring them in line with the bodywork, never mind
sticking outside of it.
FWIW I don't think you'll be troubling the laws of physics too
much in a Series vehicle with chunky tyres. I have ANR1534 rims
shot with 235/85R16 Cooper STT's on my 109, which is perfectly
acceptable on the road, and does all the off tarmac stuff I'm
ever likely to ask of it. Prior to these I had BFG Trac Edges,
(more road-biased than the Coopers) and I can't say I noticed
any difference in fuel consumption, noise or handling.
If you want something a little more road-biased I have Toyo
"Open Country A/T" on my P38 which are good off tarmac in dry
conditions, but are easily defeated by heavy clay. Not sure if
you can get them in 235 flavour though.

looks pretty flush to me...

These are ANR1534, they may look flush with the bodywork from
certain angles, but I can assure you they are not. Almost, but
not quite.

And that IIA mentioned above from another angle; you really
don't have to worry about plastering the sides with mud if you
go with the 1534's OP.

ok fine, if it stops you picking holes in my replies you are
right, you know more about the wheels and your opinion trumps
mine, the end. moving on.
my original point
750 tyres on 5 inch 231601 wheels

750 (or 900?) tyres on 6.5 inch ANR1534, mirrored for ease of
comparison. pictured here NOT "sitting about flush with the
bodywork", and NOT flicking stuff up the sides easier than the
above vehicle

Another advantage with defender / wolf rims is that disc brake
conversions will sit behind them so you dont need spacers or a
switch to alloys
