Advice needed - roof rack and free wheeling hubs
By: CountyDorset Date: January 26, 2016, 12:20 pm

I want to put a Brownchurch roofrack on my vehicle. The only
problem is that you have to drill through the gutter to fit it.
Being a safari roof, I didn't want to damage it. Is there
another way to fit it?
And, I have Fairy Freewheeling hubs - what is the cover made of?
I need to revamp them, as the front of them are properly
pitted, meaning that it's difficult to see which way to engage
them..

I thought they were gutter mounted with threaded brackets that
went on the outside of the gutter that held the rack down. And
the freewheeling hubs are made from cast aluminum.

Ah after a wee google they come in 2 flavours, clamping or bolt
down.

you could weld tube to it and buy some gutter mounts to fit
through the tube. But not very practical if its galvanized.

For the freewheeling hubs just use a bit of paint or a sharpie
pen to draw on an arrow for 4wd or 2wd.
My roof rack is clamped to the roof, think it was a company
called Bolton roof racks or Blackburn roof racks or something
similar made me new ones

Gutted, that the one i saw is a bolt on. But i assume they're on
more securely? Not that intend to carry loads on...
Good shout on the freewheeling hubs :)

the clamp on type is just as good. the top half is a nice tube
runner that sits in the gutter, the claw/clamp goes under the
roof gutter/galv channelling, M8 bolt pulls the lot together.
i had a galvanised round tube brownchurch rack, fantastic
quality, clamp type, would deffo buy again.

If you don't intend to carry a load on it, why bother? All that
extra weight up top won't benefit the handling or the fuel
economy...

By loads, I meant loads of weight. It would have been camping
equipment etc.
