Electrical relay mounting
By: kiwi s3 Date: January 24, 2016, 6:14 pm

Hi everyone,
When I bought my S3 it came fitted with a nice set of
non-working Hella Comet driving lamps and a burnt out column
switch - I presume the two features were linked! The situation
had been rectified by splicing a S2 floor mounted dip switch
into the loom.
I'm now looking to tidy up the wiring, replace the column switch
and put the driving lights back on.
I've got a relay for the driving lights, but thought while I was
at it, i'd put relays on the dip & main lights and probably the
horn as well.
It's pretty crowded on the inner wing near the battery and
adding 4 relays and all the wiring will make it cramped.
I've looked around for a suitable fuse box, but can't find
anything that will fit in the space. Has anyone got a tidier
solution to locating the relays?
Cheers,
Mark,
Wellington, NZ.

Unless you have a very big horn would not bother with a relay in
that circuit.
You can buy relays with fuses fitted in them[certainly in the
uk].
Some thing like this

same place i will fit mine.
theres already a convenient earth post there (would recommend
jumping that direct to battery for mega earth status) i've also
been dipping the cable ends in petroleum jelly before any crimps
to try and slow down the copper strands getting tarnished do to
outdoor life

Thanks everyone,
Taking advantage of the long weekend (and fantastic weather)
here in NZ, I got around to fitting three relays and the driving
lights. Looking at the best way to mount a number of relays in
the recommended location, I decided if a job was worth doing, it
was worth going over the top. So, out with the project Binky
cardboard for a template and in no time, I had a bracket.

Space for 4 relays - not sure what the fourth one will be for,
but i'm sure I'll think of something.
Then, after a lot of crimping and heat shrink, I got all the
cables attached. One of the mounting bolts for the bracket has
been used as an earthing post.

Simple job that only took a few hours. Was a bit nervous about
cutting into the existing wiring as it didn't seem a sensible
idea to cut into it when it was working, but as soon as I
touched the blocks with the bullet connectors behind the rad
panel, the wires disintegrated and the connector block just fell
off. Looks like I was just in time to avoid headlight failure!
Next project - install the new column switch and remove the S2
floor mounted dipswitch & wiring.
