       Exhaust Bending for Dummies

So, I bought a complete exhaust system from Paddocks and yes,
       it's a Britpart. I know, I know - I've already birched myself
for stupidity!! The downpipe doesn't fit, I can't get it to mate
to the manifold because it won't go far enough towards the rear
       - it fouls where it routes over the cross member. If I can
slightly increase the bend angle where it pops out of the engine
bay to go under the car, I reckon it'll go - just a couple of
degrees, at the moment it's sitting about 10mm forward of the
manifold. So my question is: given that I possess neither a
bender nor welder / blowtorch / anything much hotter than a
lighter, how best to go about fettling the blasted thing into
submission? S3 88 (petrol), if ya wanna know..

       Silly question:
Have you got the vehicle up in the air as far as you can?, that
front bit can be a pig to fit.
Or maybe you do have a duff one. - Hope not.

Yep, high enough to get it into position. Might be, as you say,
       a duff 'un..

I replaced my 1978 SWB's complete exhaust last year and the only
brand available here in NZ was Britpart.
It was a pig to fit - just could not seem to get the angle right
to thread it through where it needed to go, which ever way I
tried, it always fouled on something. Just as I was about to
give it up as an impossible job / duff part, the stars aligned
and it just slid into place. Can't explain what it was that I
did to get it to fit - it didn't seem any different to what I
had been trying for the past hour.
Before you go bending anything, I'd recommend having a few mugs
of PG tips and giving it another go.
       Cheers,
       Mark,
       Wellington, NZ.

in my experience youll never be able to bend it DIY, without a
press and mandrels. i've tried it myself, even got the pipe
glowing orange with oxy butane, 4 foot breaker bar up the end
with scaffold length on that, it just flexed back. tubes are
mega mega strong (stronger than bars!)
depends on your set up, but if it were me i would do a 270
degree slit on the side you want to bend it, using a 1mm cutting
disk+angle grinder, tweak the pipe so the halves meet back up,
       mig weld along the joins.

Sounds like you have a duff'un. I'd be on to Paddocks to get a
replacement myself. Despite Shitpart being cunts of the highest
order I think they buy their exhausts in from Bosal, or at least
did. As Darren says, bending the pipe yourself is a non-starter,
chopping it about is about all you can do.

Are you sure it's a petrol downpipe and not a Diesel one, I
thought there was a slight difference between the two?

It took Paddocks three attempts to send me the right downpipe
       for my S3 88"

Tip on bending metal with heat; if you spot heat a tube on one
face, it will bend out as the metal expands, then bend back as
it cools. The trick is to stop it bending out as it expands, but
let it bend in as is cools and contracts, so restrain it with a
windlass or ratchet strap putting a slight pressure on, spot
heat it the side you want it to bend to only, then let it cool
       naturally. Don't quench until cooled.
Bit of an art to it to get it just right, but it works...

after jacking up the vehicle, have you removed the passenger
       wheel, that can help.
