Ignition switch question
By: AlmightyBodgeKing Date: January 20, 2016, 6:35 am

Hi all,
Series 2A petrol, 1969.
The ignition switch has 4 positions. Vertical is off, right one
click is ignition on, right again is the spring start. But from
the off position it has one clock to the left which does not do
anything (or seems not to). I found one of the terminals on the
back to be powered in all positions apart from off, I have used
this for a radio so I can listen to the radio without the
ignition on, but there are things already wired to this, so what
is this extra position to the left supposed to do?
Can't find anything on google.
Thanks in advance.

Can't speak for your motor, but my 1983 military 109 has the
same deal going on (no steering lock barrel on these) and when
the key is turned to the leftmost position I get a live feed to
the heater blower motor.

Not entirely clear, does the key click to the left and stay
there or does it spring return back to the off position? Click
and lock - specifically to power auxiliary devices just as you
have used it for (Probably :rolleye0012:). Spring back - a
different switch from a diesel has been fitted, that function is
for manually operated heater plugs.
Positive or negative earth? Positive earth models use all four
terminals on the back of the switch as standard but being a
later model I imagine yours is negative earth. That being the
case, the extra cables may just be a retrofit by some previous
owner. The standard pattern lucas ignition switch always has
four terminals, but a basic petrol engine start and run circuit
only utilises three of them (power in, ignition and starter).
rover took the key-switchable auxiliaries (instuments, brake
lights) off of the ignition terminal and the rest always had a
live supply to the relevant switch.
Google doesn't have all the answers! A Haynes manual is good, an
original workshop manual is better and tracing the wiring to
figure out what goes where and does what is unbeatable. Even
more than other vehicles of the same age land rovers are so
prone to individual bodgery and 'adjustments' that its the only
way to really know how it all works.

Doug_T, I never thought of trying the blower motor. I will try
that later.
SteamPunk, the switch clicks left and stays, it is not a spring
return. It is a negative earth vehicle and always has been as
far as I can tell. Im
Just trying to work out what should do what as I plan to go
through the wiring very soon and tidy it all up. Some of it is
very flakey and I have some niggles like the ammeter does not
function unless the horn is disconnected (though it still
charges fine). Some of it is just messy pointless add-ons, like
a switch to stop the indicators flashing. Don't know what use
that would have been to anybody.
I work for ZF-TRW which used to be TRW, which used to be lucas,
so parts should not be a problem.

That's the accessory position.
You'd wire in a radio and anything else you would want working
with the engine off but you in attendance in the vehicle. I
don't think there were many standard items wired into it. Indeed
it may not be an original fitment; the switch may have been
fitted as a replacement by a PO.
