       Bolt and nut sizes guide
By: CountyDorset Date: January 17, 2016, 12:11 pm

Is there a guide anyway so that I can pre-order nuts and bolts
before I carry out some maintainence?
For example I need to replace the exhaust and mudshields for
sure. I doubt the current fittings will survive the removal, so
I want to make sure I have everything necessary for refitting.

If youre replacing the bolts, either go stainless or buy a
shitload of copper slip for ease of future maintenance. Cant
help with those specific ones Im afraid as swapped mine for
metric stainless bolts (out the work scrap bin)

M8 thread for most of them unless your going for originality
then 5/16" and you may need some 6mm or 1/4", length about
       12mm or 1/2" or 20mm or 3/4" for exhaust.

I would avoid stainless on the exhaust as they will vibrate
loose unless you by flanged nuts and bolts.
8mm zinc coated will do as they will rust into place.

You will never regret buying the parts catalogue. There are pdf
versions that can be downloaded for nowt floating about the net,
       try here:

The place I work at during the week specialises in old vehicles
and we use a lot of UNF, UNC, BSF & BSW nuts and bolts. It is
all still available, the American sizes are cheap enough but the
British sizes are getting expensive. I'm no fan of metric,
especially the tendency to replace a 1/4" UNF with M6, the M6 is
weak enough to make a difference. 5/16" UNF and M8 are more or
       less the same though.

Avoid stainless where it will make contact with ally, it will
turn the ally to white powder before your eyes, guess how I
       know.

regards the inner wing mud shields...
6 quid for a full set of stainless bolts (2 shields including
       steering box cover)
  HTML http://www.yrm-metal-solutions.co.uk/Series-2-3-Inner-Wing-Mud-Shield-Steering-Box-Cover-Stainless-Steel-Fixing-Ki
tbh they also sell galvanised mud shields too
p.s good shout on using physical barrier between stainless and
       Alluminium bodywork
steel and allu are relatively close on the galvanic table, allu
is less "noble" than steel, so the alloy becomes sacrificial.
however stainless steel and allu are at (nigh on) opposite ends
of galvanic table, it will vaporise allu quickly !
when you introduce zinc into the equation (galvanised objects,
or bright plated steel bolts) zinc and allu are very close on
the galv table, plus zinc is less noble than alluminium, so the
       zinc becomes sacrificial., alloy survives
