1980S3 88 Utility - "Mattilda"
By: freewheeling_pubs Date: January 11, 2016, 9:33 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Hi folks, as a noob I thought I'd share a bit about my old girl
and how I came to be a fan of the green oval :-)
Actually it's real simple, when I was a little kid my grandad
had a farm and with it, a Series IIa (or so I believe from
memory!). What really stuck in my mind from them was bouncing
across a field in a very noisy old truck, which I recall having
far too many gear levers, dials in the middle and a couple of
rectangular slots at the front to let air in!! Or, more
accurately, straw dust which got in my eyes and made me sneeze a
lot. Some years after that he got a fairly early S3 Hi-Cap (AAH
33X - anyone know it??) but by then I was already smitten...
Fast forward about 35 years or so.... and I finally bought this:

...that was taken the day I bought her. At Oxford services on
the M40. Waiting for the AA (the coil blew on the way home)!!
Haven't done much to her since then bar get her running a bit
better, though I suspect a lead free head is on the cards at
some point. But I have done a bit of laning:

and I'm planning a week's wild camping and some astrophotography
in either Snowdonia or the North Yorks Moors in May, while the
wife is off on a 9 day training course! Hopefully should have
some nice pics to add from then :-)

Thanks! I'd like to try and keep her as original looking as
possible (but perhaps a few subtle concessions to comfort under
the skin!) but without losing the marks of the last 35 years -
so no respray anytime soon! ;D

Lovely looking Series 3, as said already, great to see a
standard looking one.
What size tyres is she sporting?

They're 245 70s - slightly unusual (they're what was on when I
bought her) but I think they look kinda right somehow
