8:1 compression cylinder head. When did it appear?
By: AlmightyBodgeKing Date: January 9, 2016, 1:36 pm

Title says it all realy. Does anyone know what year the 8:1
cylinder head was introduced? I ask as I have just spotted the 8
on the head of my 2.25 3 brg engine. I always thought the 8:1
came along with the 5 brg engine.
Thanks in advance.

I have a very detailed history from new, every spark plug change
or filter clean is documented, so I would think a cylinder head
replacement would be in there, so I'm pretty sure it's never had
the head off.
I asked Marc at ACCV where it came from, his answer was "dunno,
think it was start of 2A"
I asked the good folks at john craddock who said factory 8:1
heads were available from 1967 onwards, so apparently I was
wrong and they were available on the 3 brg engine.

Correct. The 8:1 head became standard (for the UK at least) in
'67 (chassis suffix D) along with the black dash, single wiper
motor, negative earth and Zenith carb. As far as the 2a is
concerned AFAIK the 7:1 head was always matched to a Solex carb
and was optional from '67 onwards for markets with lower quality
petrol. Both of my '66s were 7:1, the last year it was standard
for the UK market and are chassis suffix C.

My understanding was all 8:1 engine numbers started with "9".
I think that information came from this forum but I have not
been able to find it
Cheers

Some do, some not - in the case of 904xxxxx it would be 7:1.
There's a full list on the Glencoyne website, link below:
