Freewheel hub running hot - any ideas?
       By: Pete236 Date: December 31, 2015, 5:30 pm

       Evening all.
A complete newbie here, with my 1st novice question...

Dad and I picked up our 1st ever Landy earlier today. A 1965
Series 2a. We had been on the road for about 40 mins, steady at
40 mph. A quick stop for a piddle and check over of the old girl
revealed the N/S/F freewheel hub was pretty dam hot.
I must confess I didn't check again when we got home - the rain
was coming down in swimming pool quantities.
I guess a hot hub is a bad thing, but just how bad is it? What
could be causing it, and how do I fix it?
Many thanks, and Happy New Year and all that jazz!
       Pete.

What type of hub is it dude Fairey, AVM. MAP Etc, could be it
needs re-greasing or lack of oil getting to it. If its a Fairy
be very careful with the wee plastic retainer that is held in
with a screw because if it snaps they are a complete cunt to get
       off.

it could be the wheel bearing thats causing it to get hot.

A quick look through the frost shows a pair of Fairey hubs on
       the front.

Pretty easy to remove then, undo the wee screw and you will see
a round plastic retainer that it holds in place, prise this up
being careful not to break it then pull up and sideways giving a
wee bit of pressure on the hub to help release it, if it does
not come dont force it as its about 5" long. Give it spay of
WD40/plusgas etc and let it sit for a wee while then again
carefully try to pull it out (turning the hub in the direction
of pull helps). Dont break the locking strip as they are made of
unobtanium and very hard to find and if it snaps the outer hub
cannot be removed without fucking the whole thing up.
The outer will the pull off, have a cloth or receptical ready
because some oil should come out, there is a splined actuator
and large sping behind it. the rest is just drive flange and
half shaft so is easy to use haynes book of lies from there.
here is the manual it make it easier for you.

Just make sure it's not simply the brake that might be adjusted
up a bit tight before you start dismantling :rolleye0012:
       Cheers,
       Robin.

Is the wheel hot too? If it is then it's more than likely the
       brakes binding

That is also summat to investigate when I get a chance. Another
run should be in the offing soon, after a complete change of all
fluids, filters erc. I can't wait to get to cracking, but the
weather has beaten us this weekend. And back to work tomorrow
alas, so it will have to wait a while!
