Re: Fuel starvation at high speed.

Another update:
She is definately running lean at high rpms with the britpart
carb.
Not sure what to try now, I may try using the bottom carb body
and butterfly from the britpart with the top half of the zenith,
that way it is essentially the zenith carb and jets, but without
the gap around the butterfly spindle. Or I may try swapping the
jets between the two carbs. I have 4 days left at work this
year, so it could be a nice little holiday project.
But I did manage a constant 70mph on the motorway, but had to
have the choke slightly out to do it.

Another thing worth checking is how well screwed together the
carb is, literally. Pulling the choke out improving things has
reminded me of a similar experience with the ambulance, being a
'66 that has a Solex carb (reconditioned by the Carburetter
Exchange), the screws had all worked loose over a short period
of time and air was getting past a gasket somewhere. Nipping
them up cured the problem.
Personally I wouldn't hold out too much hope a £35 carb,
especially one from the blue boxed :wanker: would be much cop.
Even the genuine Zeniths suffered from warping, I always reface
the body and top on a sheet of glass with wet and dry paper
before reassembly - it's very noticeable how much that improves
things.
How about this?

A far better bet IMHO, and return the Shitpart carb?

I'm guessing that eBay part is some kind of ex MOD as it's
branded as SOLEX rather than zenith.
Anyway, I took the landy into work today, she definately runs
lean at high rpms. I also took the zenith body with me and asked
the guys in the prototype shop if they could do anything with
it. They made me a new spindle that was slightly oversized at
the ends and reamed the body to suit. I will be taking her for a
short spin later and will report back. They even made me a nice
new gasket. Advantages of working for one of the worlds largest
automotive suppliers. Ironic that I make my living by squeezing
as much electronics into cars as possible, but choose vehicles
with none.
As for warping, the only time I have ever known this is when
they have been fitted to earlier motors to replace the solex and
the plastic spacer has not been fitted under the adaptor.
Either way, the britpart will be going back.

Thanks for the linky, I did however buy one of these

Seems the same thing, but for 8 quid I figured I would have one
as spare as it seems a worn spindle hole is the only thing the
rebuild kits don't cater for.
Anyhow, I took her out for a quick spin last night and she seems
much better with the zenith carby back on. lovely smooth idle at
450 rpm and nice acceleration and no leaning out at high rpms.
Unfortunately I am in the modern crap today as I have school run
and things to do after work.
Fingers crossed for tomorrow, hopefully she is there now.
Thanks for all the help everybody.

one more thing to note is that I noticed a lot of free play in
the accelerator pedal after switching back to the zenith carb.
looking at this it seems that the throttle linkage was adjusted
so that the throttle spring was causing the rod to push hard
against the carb butterfly rod. Maybe this was the cause of the
spindle wear to begin with. I have adjusted this so there is now
only a couple of mm free play, the pressure put on the spindle
is now far less.
