temporarily lost 3rd and 4th speed..

oh well while driving home from school today in fairly cold
weather (for us :) )
i went out of 3rd and then tried to insert 4th but nothing
happened. back in 3rd and nothing. when i stopped and tried
selecting other gears it sort of came back to normal no teeth
crunching and with good clutch. i suspect that one of the detent
springs on the syncro hub for the 3rd/4th must have gotten loose
and slid out of place? i dont think selector shaft got out of
the selector forks ?
i am in no mood of opening gearbox any time soon.

Hi Joe, I had the same thing on my series 3 but in 1st and
second, it turned out to be the big rubber O ring on the end of
the selector shaft...
an easy fix, once you take out the floor and gearbox tunnel to
get to it!
will try to attach pic of faulty bit....
sorry Joe; cant attach

if you want to use pics the easiest way is to use photobucket
and copy and paste the img code of the pic you want to use.

forks? i think i cold go in all other gears that day

when my detent springs came out, i could not move the gear stick
into 3rd or 4th position, it was absolutely solid, but i imagine
thats because the piece got jammed against the fork until it
fell out. It certainly sounds like yours has done a similar
thing.

Had that problem with a LWB 2A in the 1980's, turned out to be
the mainshaft had snapped, hope this isn't your problem
