2 days on and a few questions....
By: AlmightyBodgeKing Date: December 9, 2015, 11:18 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
       Good evening all.
So far these last 2 days, the old SIIA has done more miles than
       she did last year!
Anyway, after a few miles I now have a feel for what she needs.
       But also a few questions.
First job is to rewire the clock, whoever put it in has wired it
through the ignition so the clock stops when you switch off.
Second job is the brakes, they work and were good enough to pass
an MOT, but seem a little lacking compared to my old SIII. There
is a rote servo and it has the twin leading shoe fronts. I see
no reason why they shouldn't perform as well as the SIII brakes
when in good fettle. But should the remote servo hiss when
       braking?
Third job is fueling, she seems to run a bit rich, I need to
have a look at that and make sure the carb is in good fettle,
but what are people's thoughts on loosing the oil bath filter?
       Does it help any?
And finally ignition system. I don't think it's been touched for
many years. The dizzy internals seem to be seized so no timing
changes with revs or vacuum. New dizzy I think, can I just stick
the later type Lucas on there as I have a brand new one of those
       on the shelf?
Now this one is me, not the landie, but I can't get the hang of
changing down into second gear, going up is fine, I can do that
without so much as a clunk from the box, but changing down
results in a horrendous cocophony of steel steaming in pain. Any
tips for me in that department? I think I was spoiled with the
luxury of synchro mesh in the last one.
       Thanks in advance.

Changing down requires matching engine to gearbox revs, the
technique is double declutching, all older drivers could do this,
as syncro was (and is on yours) not fitted on the lower gears.
The trick is to take your time changing gears on these old boxes
       ;D

Cheers redwinch. I am double declutching but just don't seem the
have the knack yet. Fine going up from first to second, and
going down from second to first is fine I think because it's
hardly moving. It's just third to second gets me every time.
It's bloody good to be back behind the wheel of an old landy
       again though.

       In a nutshell:
       Changing up, 1st to 2nd:
Pull away in 1st, depress clutch, gear stick to neutral, lift
clutch, depress clutch, gear stick to 2nd.
       Changing down, 3rd to 2nd:
In 3rd, depress clutch, into neutral, lift clutch, blip
       throttle, depress clutch, into 2nd.
How many revs you give on the blip is directly relevant to the
road speed. What you are trying to do is simulate the identical
revs when selecting 2nd as if you were in 2nd gear if that makes
sense. Practice is the thing, a disused trading estate at the
weekend is where I teach newbies.
       <edit>
I should add the temperature of the gearbox oil and it's
'braking' effect on the shafts in the gearbox is a factor also,
especially when changing up. From stone cold 1st to 2nd is
almost as quick as you can get the pedal up and down, the warmer
the gearbox oil gets the longer you have to leave the clutch up.

       Ah, "Blip Trhottle".....
That's the bit I'm missing. Thank NoelC. Let's see how I get on
       today.
