overdrive

having trouble fitting overdrive, can get it entered to the
9.5mm stage and despite turning engine etc as described in
fitting instructions it seems to be at its final point hitting
against something solid when trying to push home.
Any ideas ????

You have used the correct tab washer on the mainshaft castelled
nut haven't you? - Or at least trimmed the tabs off a standard
one?
That is well known for preventing it slipping in the last half
inch or so!!!
I would not risk trying to pull it in using the nuts/studs - I
have seen several Faireys on which one of the lugs has cracked
or completely broken off. It should fit without brute force!

PS all of the above assume this OD had previously fitted
correctly into someone's gearbox and you haven't changed the
little plasticy bush in the OD mainshaft (the one you are
supposed to put some antiscuff paste on?

just to finish, i found out after i bought the overdrive that i
could have sent my transfer box to ashcroft transmissions and
had high ratio gears fitted for £270 plus the extras, i spent
approx £225 on fitting the fairey and end up with what i suspect
a poorer version with the complication of engaging the overdrive
when needed.
I think i would have gone for the high ration ashcroft option if
i had to do it again.

Have you actually spoken to Ashcroft as there website lists the
HRT box as unavailable?

Really? Try leaving the overdrive engaged in all the gears and
see if you feel the same way as that would have the same effect.
I wouldn't want that kind of increase even in my 88 with 2.5
petrol and stage 2 head, I've tried leaving the Roverdrive
engaged and it's quite unpleasant. Tdi then fair enough, but
anything lower powered feels very overgeared.

i second the comments in favour of the od.
just make sure it holds oil. it will be so handy acting as a
splitter
(3rd normal (od off)/ 3rd high(od on)/4th normal(od off)/4th
high (od on))
you can also try locking the gearbox in gear and open the
inspection plate on top of the transfer case and turn the
overdrive shaft using a screw driver whilst levering it in.

also in agreement about overdrive.
the real issue with the 4 speed box (other than lack of road
speed) is the big jump between 3rd and 4th. ashcroft, range
rover diffs, big tyres dont fix that at all.

I spoke to Ashcroft and they will change out the gears for high
ratio if you send your transfer box to them, it costs £270 + the
dreaded and freight
