       Gearbox choice
By: pesto Date: November 23, 2015, 12:22 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
I've planned to go the TDI route with my 109 2a SW. The
currently fitted 2.5 NA is too weak for the heavy vehicle which
got proven during our journey through Africa.
I also plan to use the LT77 or R380 gearbox. This would be
possible to run with the series transfer box or with the LT230
(which would allow an under drive :wink) as I learned.
My question: Is the series transfer box much louder than the
LT230? The series transfer box has the advantage of keeping the
lever in its original position. Beside this I'm afraid of a lot
of noise which I experienced with the series gearbox/transfer
box setup in hot conditions. What is your experience and what
       would be your choice?
I've asked this question to the series2 forum but did not get
       much response. :(

       Bon Soir.
Everything is possible - it just comes down to how much you're
willing (and able) to modifiy to make it fit.
This is what I learned when we started the 200 Tdi into Series
       Hybrif.
It is possible to mate the Series Transferbox to a LT 77 or R380
but it needs quite a bit of work.
The "standard" LT77 transferbox will obviously fit the am
       gearboxes but creates 2 issues.
One is ratios - you really need to look into "upping" them or
add an overdrive as the Tdi will reff it g..ts out getting the
109 to a normal speed. So, RRC / Disco I / etc. ratio diffs are
       often fitted to overcom that.
Secondly, fitting the LT77 TB could / will cause problems with
the front axle if you have full time 4WD. Solution to that is to
convert the TB to Part Time 4WD or find a Stage One front axle.
They do come up from time to time but at a price...
Whatever way you go - you will need to make sure both gearbox
and TB ar in good condition, otherwise the Tdi will finds faults
very quickly but a lot depends on your drive style..
I have just gotten a TB from this guy
       (
  HTML http://www.syncrogearboxes.com/)
and Shabs knows his stuff and
loves Land Rover projects. He'll be rebuilding a few boxes from
       me over the coming years.

I looked into this a while ago when I was considering putting an
LT77/R380 with a Series TB and a V8 into my old 109 (now
Jonny's). It can be done, but there are more gotchas than might
be first evident - for example you may need to notch a
crossmember to give the rear propshaft more space. Apparently
the clearance can get very tight. Military chassis's are already
notched so an easy option might be to fit a military
       crossmember?
Re the front axle, the web is full of contradictory
recommendations - some people say running a standard Series
front axle is fine and theirs has lasted 300 years without
issues, others say theirs disintegrated 100yds down the road...
! I cringe whenever someone mentions sourcing a Stage One axle -
it means another classic has died :( (I'm biased being a Stage
One owner lol). Whatever option you decide, I'd strongly suggest
you put in a couple of thousand miles in the vehicle before
going on a pukka overland trip, and take appropriate spares. If
nothing else, it'll give you the confidence to do the trip!
Arjan, interesting to hear your good feedback for
syncrogearboxes - a friend of mine recently bought a recon R380
for his 110 and also said they were very good

       Yes - many myths around...
I have several friends who run the 200 / 300 Tdi in a Series
with the Series box & Trabsferbox and have no problems. One, a
SWB was used for many trips to the Alps & laning there and some
serious offroading without issues. I have had several LR's &
..C's with the well know Mazda lump and never had issues with
       the driveline.
And yes, we need to care for our Stage Ones.
I think it is all very much down to the driver and his right
       foot...
Shabs will be getting the Hybrid's transmissions sooner then
planned as the TB went after 23 years of abuse... Oh well, good
moment to fit the new rear diff with locker..... :smilewide:

A 200 tdi and R380 combination will work - no doubt. It is just
the question of using the Series TB which keeps the levers in
its original position or going for the LT230 which requires a
part time modification or Stage One front axle.
But back to my question - is the series TB much louder than the
       LT230? Are there further disadvantages?

       [/quote]
Not in my experience; I find very little difference in transfer
box noise between my Series and my Ninety. However the 5 speed
LT77 mainbox is far quieter than the Series box.
Also, do a little searching on LR4x4 and you'll see that a
couple of people have fitted LT77 and LT230 combos into Series
vehicles and managed to get them under the original gearbox
tunnel keeping the red and yellow knobs in the correct
positions, but using them to operate the high/low and difflock.
Don't forget, if you use an LT230 then the most common ratios
are 1.41:1 or 1.22:1 - so if you stay on the Series 4.7:1 diffs
you'll be undergeared. Might have to budget for a 3.54 diff
swap, or a set of 1.003:1 transfer gears from an early Range
       Rover auto.

front axle myth its just based on the UJ wobble issue right ? i
mean UJ's arent inherently weaker than a cv joint

For the record, I've had all manner of Solihull transmissions in
leaf and :gay: sprung motors and the only transfer box
noticeably quieter than the rest in my experience is the
Borg-Warner chain drive jobbie. My current 300Tdi RRC so fitted
is considerably quieter than any of the Discgays I've
       owned/driven.
