       The rebuild of Proper Job- 1977 SWB petrol Series 3

       I bought Proper Job 13 years ago and made the cardinal sin of
       buying the first Land Rover I saw, in the dark, in the wet. It
       was MOT'd and quite driveable once a knackered UJ was replaced
       and a good start in Land Rover ownership. Unmolested and
       virtually standard it was a good starting point for Land Rover
       ownership, it had gradually worked it's way through various
       owners from North London to my native Somerset.
       In the first few years I replaced the head with an unleaded one
       after the valve seals went and fixed a few other typical Land
       Rover faults including swivels and hub seals. Although
       reasonably sound when I purchased it I knew the chassis had been
       repaired over the years and it had a new rear cross member
       fitted a few years before I bought it. In 2004 the inevitable
       MOT failure meant I had to bite the bullet and replace the
       chassis with a new Galvanised replacement. I got married the
       following year and our new house did not have parking so it
       stayed with my Mum and Dad for the next 10 years, my dad using
       it from time to time but it was 1 hour from where I lived and
       the arrival of children saw Proper Job shuffled well down the
       priority list. The lack of anything other than basic maintenance
       started to show and my dad was using it less and less.
       In 2010 we moved to our current house and after an extension to
       the house I finally had not only parking but a proper garage
       which meant in October 2014 I could finally bring Proper Job
       home. The journey from Somerset to Wiltshire was uneventful and
       was made on the last day of the valid MOT but Proper Job was
       finally under cover:

       I knew the bulkhead was starting to deteriorate and there were
       numerous oil leaks with many smaller jobs to address and was
       faced with 2 courses of action; spend a couple of weekends
       fixing things for the MOT or do it properly and take the
       bulkhead off and get it repaired and ideally galvanised. As I
       have no intention of ever selling Proper Job then there was only
       one way to do it - properly.
       Today I started work and am working from front to back so had
       the bumper off first. The Radiator panel is pretty ropey at the
       bottom and will need some serious welding to get it back in
       shape. My dad is quite handy with the welder so I will ask him
       to look it over:

       I recently bought several cans of 400ml maintenance spray in
       Asda at just £1.25 each (like WD40)
       Just thought you might need to know  ;-)

       Thanks for the tip Steve, Our auto accessory shop in town closed
       down earlier this year and was selling everything 50% off so
       have a few cans in stock but based on yesterdays progress I will
       need some more.

       Thanks, I am hoping the children will help out, a lot of the
       photos of me as a child are in my Dad's garage helping out on
       the MG's

       its a well worth endeavor, mine was going to be off the road
       just over winter as i put the chassis right but it took me 2yrs
       to finish, but now she sits on a new galve chassis with galve
       bulkhead, front panel and anything else that could be shot
       blasted and dipped so i should not have to worry about rust for
       a few years.
       Plus gas gave first class penetration and another thing i did
       was copper grease as many bolts as i could to facilitate future
       removal.
       So take your time and make the best motor you can.

       the Rad before giving to my dad.

       A little reminder in the work car park of why I am doing this.
       With a 70 mile commute there is little chance of Proper Job

       Got the wings and doors off the other night, many of the nuts
       were new ones I put in when I did the chassis rebuild 10 years
       ago and came off pretty easily

       With the wing off the true state of the footwell was revealed:

       The door posts are in good condition with the exception of a
       small hole at the bottom of the passenger side. I am planning to
       get in touch with Ashtree about getting a galvanised replacement
       over the next few weeks.

       that footwell is in near perfect compared to mine which must of
       been used by Fred Flintstone. i could see the wheel from inside
       on both footwell and the road underneath as i drove along and if
       i pressed the brake hard the whole bulkhead flexed.
