Stainless exhaust mild steel front pipe?
By: magnetman Date: November 19, 2015, 11:08 am

Hi Guys , just bought a new stainless exhaust for the series 3
88" petrol 2.25, looking at the old system the front down pipe
is still fine, almost no rust, but the mid section and back box
are toast...
thing is, had a world of grief changing the down pipe from the
manifold on the wifes MGB, ended up with snapped studs etc, so
was thinking just change the mid section and back box section on
the Landy, and leave the good mild steel down pipe on....
any downside to mixing stainless with mild steel exhaust
sections? ???

It will depend if the stainless has it's joints in the same
place length wise and same bore at clamp point to old system.

Plus it always helps to use brass nut at the on any studs that
way you'll always get them undone.

Thanks guys!
The bore looks the same, and the size looks right, only thing is
if the fitting is not the male/female setup....which I won't
know until I dismantle (does that sound Pervy?)
Will let you know when job done...
Hope the new exhaust lasts ok the welding looks very like mild
steel to me...
Have not got any brass nuts, but have got job lot of Galv nuts
and bolts and an angle grinder!

snapped off a stud in my manifold the other week (was replacing
an old copper nut which the thread had stripped) the others are
tight and its not causing an issue at the moment. i think you
are wise to be cautious!
if you are buying the whole exhaust could just keep the SS
downpipe on the shelf for another time when you absolutely
cannot avoid removing the down pipe
