Achtung. more on door tops (new glazed ones)

Just out of interest I thought I'd offer the following re SP
glazed door tops, widely available on weebay and their own
       site..
I recently ordered a pair of the fully glazed SP tops via the
bay of pigs, a few folk had said they were good and the blurb
rants about how wonderful they are etc..
When they arrived, they had been very inadequately packaged, and
dropped on the corners which had bent the thin (rear) edges,
they would have needed some panel beating and if you were being
really gay would prob always look a bit creased. (not that I'd
give a shit, but that's not the point )
Additionally, contrary to the claims, the quality of glass /
channel installation was SHIT, the channels had been bunged in
roughly, very bent in places, crudely 'nailed' in and had great
big lumps of Dumdum visibly poked on the corners like someone's
old chewing gum, most of us could do way better ourselves on the
       fuckin kitchen table!
I contacted SP via ebay msg and suggested they either refund me
a meaningful ammount and I'd fix or put up with them, or they
could just have 'em back for refund.
Anyway, they obv didn't fancy giving me a discount for their
shit product and said theyd refund me, now there was no way I
was going to send 'em back at my expense so they agreed to send
courier, I arranged to have someone wait..they didn't fuckin
turn up, angry message to them, re arranged pickup next day,
ditto..guess what ? they didn't turn up again, finally 3rd time
I waited in myself and they actually collected them.
The refund was fun too..I paid for them immediately by Paypal,
the refund, which should also have been immediate, however
didn't show in ebay's system and appeared to be 'pending'
...after some more angry messages to them and Pisspal, I finally
got a usable refund some 10 days later :banghead
So if you're considering buying these shite door tops , please
bear the above in mind eh..

Useful to know, naming and shaming when fair is helpful. Perhaps
the issue is the 'faff' of installing the glass is trusted to
some unskilled minion who doesn't give a fuck - other than the
transit damage was the metalwork of the door top itself OK?

Not that great in the metal dept either tbh, I wasn't impressed
with any of it, just for example on angled 'folds' at the front
there were little nicks punched out to assist the forming of the
shape, which would let in wet and doesn't say much for the
tooling or techniques used to produce these, I'd describe them
as a bit shoddy, certainly no better than what I'd expect from
India or somewhere ( if indeed they don't actually come from
       some non brit land )
I'd also think any reasonable person would condemn the whole
unit on the basis of crappy amatuer installation of the glass /
runners too as this is fundamental to the whole product,
especially a so called superior one.
The whole shebang was punted as a quality item, better than the
rest etc.... 'fraid in my opinion, that's just not the case.
I have no qualms at all about naming and shaming them, they sent
out a sub standard product, it was damaged due to their careless
inadequate packing, then they fucked me around vis returning and
refund, so I stand squarely by what I say.

I picked some stuff up off them last week (they aren't that far
from me really) and the door tops seem ok to be honest. There is
a guy there who seems to just be fitting glass all day so maybe
he was a bit fed up. The parts (footwells etc..) are just
generic ones from the usual places, no better or worse quality.
It's a strange place though, on a scabby farm in an open fronted
barn. Some lovely old land rovers around the back though, all
being lost to the undergrowth. For me, the guys seemed to know
their stuff, had a good chat to them, usual quality at the usual
price. Nothing to write home about but nothing for me to
       complain about either.

I think that where welding / metal fabrication and old Land
Rovers are concerned, this must be the norm,
having recently been to a well known Landy bulkhead restorer who
       has a nice flashy website,
let's just say that their yard is most definitely not so....

Always good to hear feedback on suppliers
Must admit this is the first bit of bad press I've read about
them, but its useful to know that they can be 'reluctant' to
refund where something isn't quite right. Are you repairing the
tops you have now, or have you got replacements from elsewhere
       Peter?

those are actually drains (if i am reading it right, the little
       U shaped cutouts)
i'm not going to try and counter your opinion, as its, errr,
your opinion! however, even standard land rover door tops are
constructed like this, they arent designed to be water tight,
water runs into the cavity at the corners of the glass channel
and down the window lock hole, then out through the bottom of
the doortop crease onto the rubber seal between the door top and
bottom. (this is why the rubber seal has a lip on it, which is
fitted inboard, and facing up, so water can only go outside the
vehicle) infact this construction is the reason they rot in the
first place and is such a huge market for replacements.
critically for my (high) regard of SPL, i bought unglazed tops
and fitted all my own hardware. i wanted my glass for
originality and bought new LR runners as they are stainless.
mostly it was for cost reasons, plus i am cynical and nerdy
bloke with trust issues. i either CAN do it better, think i can
do it better, or think i can do it better but fuck it up but its
my fault anyway and i don't have to put up with someone elses
       failure.

I'm normally the same Darren, although i admit this time i was
being lazy and it was only £50 glazed, plus i'm not bothered
       about originality for this one

Perhaps I'm being :gay: but on motors I'm not fussed about being
original I go for the boingy genuine all ally door tops with the
slanted glass. I got all excited when Rocky Mountain started
making their ally offering until I saw a pair at a show on their
stand, offered cheap due to dented in corners. The boingy ones
       are much stronger in comparison.

I have a pair of alloy door tops that I got unglazed from a
local military surplus place (Anchor, Ripley) for about £40
each. They have Rocky Mountain labels on them but are quite
strong. The drivers one has been on for nearly 12 years now, and
the passenger one for about 8. Are the new RM ones complete crap
or just the way they are glazed? I glazed mine as original, but
with new (black) aluminium parts. The aluminium is quite thick
and took a bit of getting the self tappers into. I actually
enlarged the drain holes as I didn't want water slopping around
       in them.
According to Craddocks, the 110 type door tops are nearly £300
each, so need to be bloody good! These are MWC4746 RH and
       MWC4747 LH.
