       Fairey overdrive reconditioning
       By: Doug_T Date: October 22, 2015, 6:27 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
My Fairey is noisy. And I don't mean "They all do that Sir"
noisy, I mean it's like sitting next to a bandsaw permanently -
whether engaged or disengaged (although it's much worse when
engaged). A cursory glance through the top yesterday indicates
the gears themselves might be worn a bit too much for my liking
       - so the next step is to haul it out and strip it down. It's
definitely run far too hot as the oil looks and smells burnt
(although it never seemed to empty itself into the transfer box
       like most of them do).
Has anybody reconditioned one of these properly, and do you
think it was worth it? I'm not talking about a "bearings and
seals" refresh that most people seem to mean, I'm talking a
full-on replacement of all the worn parts. Notwithstanding the
lack of availability of the layshaft gears (anybody got an NOS
one they'd be willing to swap for purple bits of paper?) I recon
it's going to cost upwards of the £500 mark for mainshaft,
output shaft, clutch, synchroniser unit and all bearings and
seals. Coupled with however much a layshaft would cost (and the
other gear on the back), allied with how much I value my time,
and the cost of the Roamerdrive doesn't seem all that steep.
Are good ones really not that noisy?

they seem to be bringing a few hundred quid on ebay now. So that
plus what you would of spent on parts would take you close to
the price of the roamerdrive. That's the way i would go to be
       honest

Mine is whisper quiet, not touched since factory fit in 1981, 82k
       miles, on Mandy Moo.
I have one for Delilah ready for an input shaft, which I
have, just don't have the balls to do the job!!!
I'd go down the Roamerdrive route rather than invest in an
       expensive Fairey rebuild. :-?

goggle overdrive rebuild and there is one from a guy on LRuk
forum. Very comprehensive. Snagger I think.

No issues pulling it apart and putting it back together - I've
done it before to give one a refresh with new bearings and
seals. It's more that I'm wondering about the viability of
       replacing the gears.

I think the cost of replacing gears and shafts would make it
prohibitively expensive. I would try and find a better one or
       stump up for a Roamerdrive.
I rebuilt my former Fairey and it cost around £220 for input
shaft, clutch, seals, gaskets etc nearly 8 years ago! If the
running surfaces of the gears are damaged, then I would not
       bother.
Of course you need to take it apart to find out, then wait for
       the parts to arrive etc.
My only addition to Nick's strip down advice was to jam the
screwdriver/piece of rod holding the layshaft bits in place
using a small piece of cloth. Otherwise the rod can fall out and
the bits go everywhere, so you have to start again.
A new overdrive should be good for 100,000 - my Fairey one did
about that between 1979 and 2006. That said, it always had a bit
of a whine even when it was new.
I have an early Roverdrive now that has been in since 2007 - I
had to adjust the spring on the detent ball to keep it in gear,
but it has been fine since.

I pulled one off a '70 six pot which is now on my ambulance and
that is about as quite as Faireys get, you can hear something
when it's engaged but you have to actively make an effort to
listen for it if that makes sense. That replaced the screamer I
fitted originally that was in the doing permanent damage to your
       ears zone.
I've had a Roverdrive since 2002-ish and after tweaking it
thanks to Sunny Jim's advice some time ago to stop it jumping
out of gear and the syncro hub being replaced (sort-of as a
warranty job in 2008, I paid for the hub and RM UK fitted it for
free) I've had no other issues.
For me it would depend on cost, if you're in the £500+ zone for
parts I'd be inclined to flog the Fairey and buy a Roamerdrive
       TBH.

Cheers chaps, we'll see what it looks like when I pull it apart
and see what state the gears are really in. No chance of "having
to listen" for it - it manages to drown out the combined noise
of the STT's, the ACR exhaust and the flapping tilt. I've been
       in Bell-212s that are quieter!!!

my 88 SW petrol has factory fit fairey (still has dashboard
sticker too !) its silent when disengaged, slight whines when
engaged (a definite noise increase, but bearable noise)
       109,000 miles on it.
tbh, if i didnt have one or it was knackered, i'd be looking
       into heytsee/santana or roamerdrive.

Good call on the Heystee / Santana overdrive; how does the drive
mechanism compare to the Fairey one? Anybody know?
