Bulkhead was removed and taken to Ashtree Landrover, to be
repaired and galvanized,
not expected back for approx 3 months.
So the motor was removed.

With the engine out, I hatched a plan to deal with that leaking
crank rear oil seal............
An engine stand was purchased.
Sump removed:

It was these T seals which really had me stumped though!

After much swearing and cursing and probably 2 sets of T seals
later, I discovered the best way was to oil them up and use a
body repair dolly
each side a little at a time to help persuade the cork seals in
as you gently tap the whole assembly into place
:smiley-furious:

to use.?

i'd never actually considered how you would replace the T seals,
when they are basically interference fit and way too big for the
hole.
right now, in my swivel chair, i just decided i might use a
couple of stout feeler gauges held in the block, to kind of
"ramp" them in, loads of oil.
good pictures, learning lots here :)

Jonny, Yes the difficult bit is making the stand fit, in use I
kept worrying that it would collapse, but all good in the end.
£39.95 inc delivery, not bad as I can stash it away till next
time, or sell it and get most of my money back!
see it's gone up in price now £42.99

DarrenH, Your feeler gauge method is along the same lines as my
method, just my metal was a tad thicker,
and hurts more when you drop it on your toe :2mo5pow:

Those T seals can be a sod, once you've mastered the knack its
childs play, As suggested by Darren, feeler gauges work a charm,
and a bit of loctite flange (fnaar fnaar) sealant helps things
along massively
Inside of your engine block looks spick and span, I'm used to
seeing black slime covering everything.
Cheers, Jack.

in the absence of RTV sealants in the 1950s, what was land
rovers original method of sealing the two halves of the black
seal retainer ? (the bit on the right of your main cap T-seal
picture)

Hi DarrenH,
I will let someone with more than my 6 months of Land Rover
experience answer that one :rolleye0012:
