Series 3 1981 SWB ~ "Gavin" ~

As promised on arrival here, details of my first Landy and it's
ongoing rebuild....
I decided to name him after his previous owner, Gavin from
Derbyshire.
Here was the photo in the advert:

So on the way back from delivering my previous classic truck to
it's new owner even further north, and cash burning a hole in my
pocket,
I stopped off to check it out on the way home.

First couple of weeks running about were very enjoyable,
although the big Weller wheels and tyres kept trying to yank the
steering wheel from my hands.

So a set of standard wheels were found and others sold on to
finance them...

Being new to all things Land Rover, without realizing what I was
letting myself in for, I bought the second Landy I viewed
complete with it's very own rotted out chassis and bulkhead!!

I knew there were some issues at purchase, but obviously should
have looked at a few more........

Any way, all this is retrospective, as the purchase was back in

Nothing that can't be fixed with a bit of time and money. Looks
much better on the proper wheels

Next step, was to mount the spare on the bonnet, remove those
head and tail light guards, and have a few months
dawdling around in it, so on my first proper trip out:

Got back home, put it into reverse and the gear lever snapped
off in my hand, flush to the tunnel!!

With the floor out, I could begin to see what I really
had..........
This (front of NSR spring) spring hanger had been badly repaired
on several occasions:

chassis! Held together by thin air.
