       Handbrake return springs
       By: D4B Date: October 12, 2015, 3:35 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
       Hi All,
Having spent a wee while this afternoon trying to refit the
       springs (yes behind the shoes)
I am now wondering what the magic trick is to getting these
       little buggers back on!!
       Any suggestions very welcome ???
       Cheers Steve

i use a pair of long nosed mole grips and a bit of brute force
to stretch the spring and then lever onto the pin with a thin
       screw driver.

I made myself a little tool for this out of some stiff wire,
bent into a loop one end and a thin bolt the other end for a
handle, I've used it times and not broke it yet.
It's hard to explain without a pic, but you can buy something
       similar or make your own.
       This sort of thing:

The "trick" is to not do it the way you are doing it!
Hang the top shoe on the adjuster and expander. This shoe needs
the springs already attached. With the top shoe fitted and the
springs hanging down you can attach the springs to the bottom
shoe. Now you only have to pull the bottom shoes over the
expander and adjuster, I often use grips or a screwdriver to
lever against the backing steel NOT the friction materials!
There was also a brake shoe tool that slides over each end in
turn that enables you extra leverage to pull the shoes/springs
apart and position the shoes correctly.
The job becomes very easy with the drive flange removed!

Success! Done it today, decided to remove the drive flange,
which made it so easy in the end 8)
