they're all marked 24v
Is it not possible to overcome this, and convert to 12V using
some
electrickery from Maplins or RS components perhaps :lightblb:

Yep, I'll have to stick the jewel lamp somewhere. Determined to
keep it all looking OEM still ;)[/quote]
It should go to the left of the heater fan switch where civvy
models usually have a blanking plug. :-)

D4B - he was selling both 12v and 24v so hopefully he has just
sent me the wrong one. I've emailed him anyway so we'll see what
he says. I can get some of the segments in 12v elsewhere, but I
don't want to pay twice for them ;)
Noel - that sounds good thanks
Can't wait to get started on all these jobs now, just waiting
for some decent weather as I'll be working on the driveway
unless I can blag some time in my friends workshop. Which
reminds me, I need to see how he is getting on with the gearbox
overhaul...!

i agree, 12v triple guage does exist, part PRC1776
the 24v one is PRC1777
guessing it was a hack by smiths because MOD were outstripping
demand, land rover started converting 12v civvy models to basic
MOD spec

Bad news :(
I've just spoken with the retailer and he said he checked all
his stock after I emailed him originally about it - all his
stock are 24v :( Apparently he's been mis-sold them so he has a
lot of 24v clusters now. He's been very good about it, is very
apologetic and offered to pay for the return postage without
being prompted. So the search goes on lol.

The reasoning behind the CL (Commercial Logistics) variants,
that is the slighty MODded civvy models, was purely monetary as
I understand it. There were always going to be a certain number
of Land Rovers that would never see action and never leave the
UK, therefore fitting all the extra costly bits was unjustified.
The same thing happens now, the 'Wolf' was megamoney back in the
90s, more than double the cost of a civvy variant (£48k I
think), hence the run of the mill Defenders for transportation
purposes only are leased civvy vehicles.
For some reason the MoD decided they were going to move from
capillary to electrical gauges, there are 12v and 24v versions
of both. The easy way to spot the difference is capillary gauges
have a temperature marked - 85c in the centre if I remember
rightly, electrical gauges are plain.

After several weeks I'm going to return the instrument cluster -
the seller said that he'd try and find a 12v one to exchange it
with, but I haven't heard from him since, and I haven't been
able to find all the segments in 12v, so that scuppers the idea
of converting it. I have a plan B for the instrumentation, so
I'm asking for a refund.
In the meantime, I've bought a pair of SU HS6 1.75" carbs to go
on the V8. It currently has HIF44s which are working fine, but
aren't nice to set up, and frankly I've never liked that design.
I contemplated fitting a Weber 500 and Edelbrock combo but have
decided to stick with twin SUs instead. Besides being around
£800 cheaper, the HS6s are a daddle to set up, are very reliable
and the LPG conversion will be straight forward when the time
comes. So I'll need to clean them up and get the correct jets,
needles and springs for them to suit the engine. They came off a
V8 so are the correct inclined type and should have usable jets
& needles, but as I'll be stripping them down I may as well get
the correct parts fitted from the start. Is anyone on here
running HS6s on a 3.5 V8? If so I'd appreciate it if you could
tell me what jets etc you are using ;)

Another moment of weakness lol. I've now got a nice galvy
military front bumper for the 109 ;D
