       Swivel pin pre load

       According to Haynes the pre-load pull on a swivel should be 14 -
       16 lbs however I have read somewhere else that that is wrong and
       should be 8 - 10 lbs. Can anyone advise who is right please, or
       what should it be?

       I tend to set them at around 10/12 lb or 14/16 lb with the oils
       seal in position. Works for me, fill your relay with oil whilst
       you are at it.

       There are different pre loads used depending on whether the seal
       is fitted or not. It is usual for 2 different poundages to be
       quoted depending on this.
       8/10 pounds without the swivel seal but with a lubed railco bush
       is the correct setting. Remember that is continuous pull after
       the initial movement has been made.

       Thank you both for your replies. This has answered my question.
       Just as an aside before I started to dismantle the swivel, due
       to oil leak at axle flange, I checked the pull. The numpty who
       did it before had got a 36lb pull and only one shim at the top
       bush. No wonder the steering was so heavy.

       I wonder if the incorrect shimming was done to stop play in a
       worn railco bush ? I tend to modify the kingpin to take a grease
       nipple and squirt a bit in now and then. Not really required but
       a bit belt n braces instead of relying on the splash oil feed.

       You are right to suggest checking the top railco bush. People
       often try and take out the movement but just end up hiding it
       from inspection only to find the car actually drives worse than
       if it was left alone!
       For railco bushes though I would suggest oil or at least "one
       shot" liquid grease be used. The true bearings love grease cos
       there is plenty of room for it to get in. Tight railco bushes
       with large touching surface areas much prefer oil.

       You may well be correct about a previous owner taking out shims
       to take up wear. Judging by some of the other bodges I have come
       across now makes sense. The outer race of the bottom roller
       bearing was indented with the shape of the rollers. I'm looking
       forward to a new driving experience as soon as my new parts
       arrive. Still, suppose I had better have a look at the other
       side now!

       Swivel housing bearing, bushes and preload combined with wheel
       bearings make such a huge difference to the way a landy drives
       and handles.
       Do both swivels and it will feel like a new car!
       Indented bottom bearings and over tight railco bushes will give
       horrible wandering steering that refuses to self centre
       properly.
       The preload on the railco bush is not only to remove all slack
       from the system but it is also the primary method of steering
       dampening. The steering damper was only fitted as options and
       later vehicles. Over dampening/over tight railco bishes stops
       self centering steering that helps with easy and relaxed
       steering on fast roads.

       When all is done on swivels. Set the tracking as well it can
       really improve the steering. Where are you ? I have some home
       made tracking rods if needed.

       Thanks spitfiremk1uk and divie for your comments. Sorry to be a
       bit slow in replying, have been busy fixing the Landy. Just
       finished but yet to road test ready for MOT next week. Will be
       doing other swivel soon but is nowhere near as bad as the one
       just fixed. It was only an oil leak at the axle flange that
       started me off.
       Thanks for tracking rods offer but also have some. Replaced
       track rods ends whilst at it.
