88" Rear Tub Alignment
By: clemo902 Date: September 28, 2015, 4:39 am
---------------------------------------------------------
I am part way through my first rebuild, and have just re-fitted
the rear tub onto a new Richards chassis, but, things are not
lining up as they should. (Not that I was expecting them to)!
Just asking really for a bit of re-assurance and advice.
The 3 tub crossmembers are in good condition, and with the 6mm
or so thick rubber mounting pads fitted the tub sits nicely on
the chassis supports and the rear holes are not far off lining
up, and I have been able to get 2 bolts through the centre two
holes of the rear crossmember without drilling or opening up the
previous holes.
The problem is that the two central front mounting lugs at the
front of the tub together with the outer pairs of holes in the
tub are way too low to match up with the corresponding holes on
the tabs on the chassis.
If I lift the front of the tub up so the front holes line up,
the tub is then not sitting the chassis and I will need to put
additional packing under the rubber pads, up to around 15mm
approx on the first tub crossmember.
I have not yet fitted the bulkhead, so I am thinking of doing
that next and fitting the doors so I can see how things are
height wise between the doors and the tub.
Any advice. comments etc welcome.
Thanks !

Fit the front bulkhead into position and tighten up temporarily.
It wont be aligned front to rear but it will give you the right
hight to the waist line.
Now taking the land rover body alignment tool (A ball of string)
run string around the waist line of the vehicle. The rear
crossmember body mounts align the rear tub front to rear. Start
by sitting the tub on the rubber pad supports and go from there.
A stretchy builders line can be pulled tight and prevent string
sag!
Now you can judge what is out of alignment.

^^^ - there was an article in one of the mags a while back about
one of the civvy contractors that rebuilds smashed up Wolfs for
the MoD. They said exactly the same, start with the bulkhead and
work back/forward from there.
