The only reason why i am so stuck with land rovers ... (series)

hi.
i don't think anyone likes to go through obituaries...i am not
writing to force you to spare a thought or a prayer. but i
thought i should stick a photo here. This is the reason why i am
so much into land rovers.
The land rover has been in the family as a work horse. According
to some searches i have been told it was used in London. Hand
written british transport sheet is still there somewhere. it
is a rare one and special one personally though not mine.. That
is my father who passed away about a week or so ago much to our
surprise. not the best father i must admit (for me at least) but
life is still not the same without him. this photo was taken
almost a year ago (not mine). i still recall the day as if it
was yesterday trying to clean it up a bit and towing it to the
village centre to take part in a old vehicles motor show.. i did
not receive any "thanks" from him but he was happy to sit the
whole morning next to her and just having people stop him and
enquire on the rare and unusual set up with the broomwade in the
back and also had a hydraulic winch which was removed prior to
shipping to malta (rivet counters will easily notice the chopped
mount up front) it is still missing a bottom pto. i recently
bit the bullet and bought a hydraulic winch (many thanks for the
help KEV) at some point he also wished to source a winch for it
(mid 1990s) and i was excited as a kid to hear that. but sadly
when i got the winch we were not in such good terms and he did
not give a care.
with all the banter of how slow a 2.25 diesel might be this has
always plodded on with the standard capacity. Even if it is just
one heavy lwb with the equivalent of another 2.25 in the back he
never went the 2.5 or perkins route. he was not so keen on
servicing however and i recall it has seen perhaps many more
engine overhauls than oil changes. He also had it resprayed
several times. Was used in drilling for rock blasting in
quarries and light trenching (for waste water pipe laying) in
the good old days when i wasn't even born. but due to restricted
air flow he damaged the head a couple of times and stopped using
it for that purpose. it was heavily used for agricultural work
and also trucking big payloads of onions to the markets in
maltese main island twice a week for nearly the whole summer. i
learnt to drive in it and also drove it to the markets in the
last years of onion production.
still sits in our garage and silently waiting for revival. i do
not know if it will be through my hands or some other land rover
enthusiast. life is complicated you know and it is terrible at
times.

Hi Joseph, sorry to hear about your loss, always a sad time. I
don't think you should rush any decision re the Landy - it
obviously holds a lot of family memories for you. Keep it for a
year and then consider your options, you'll be thinking clearer
then.
All the best, Sam

Mandy and I are so sorry to hear about your Dad's passing, - sad
tmes. :(
Although we never met him, I had the privelige of seeing his
truck close up.
Don't think about letting the 109" go, do you think the small
motor museum at Qawra would have room for it if you offered it
on loan to them?
Failing that, how about asking if they would like to borrow it
at the air museum in Attard? - I know it's not an aviation
related vehicle, but I seem to recall they have all manner of
stuff on site to view.
Or, failing that, leave it where it is. 8)

hi all.
i guess i have decided not to adorn the fb page with his pics as
it is a bit gloomy to see him there. he was quite a character
with all his yelling and shouting he filled the house. it is
empty now.
there is a similar one in mosta Chris. painted white but dont
know if the compressor is still on. many were imported when dad
got his. but since they proved heavy and the oil cooler at the
front lead to over heating they were quickly removed. it has
been garaged for a good number of years now. 7 years?
there is plenty of air compressors still in there. atlas copco
and an old 6 cylinder ford powered ingersoll Rand from 1956-60
Gryo Flo unit. i do not know it was nice to see them operate
really but the trend is scrap and get rid of things..
... back to school here but anyhow so i will have my mind
focused on work for some time..
thanks
joseph

sorry to hear of your loss. I think keeping it and eventually
getting it back up and running would be a good way to go. As
others have said, lots of memories for you and in years to come
they will be more precious (i know..). Even if it takes time to
get around to sorting it, you may be glad you did. Looks a very
interesting one as well
