Fire Engines, for when a Land Rover simply isn't big enough
By: NoelC Date: September 25, 2015, 8:50 am

Thanks to a family friend working for Surrey Fire & Rescue
Service for 30-odd years I've always had an interest in the big
red things that tear arse about the local area, and in
particular the batch of Dennis Rapiers that were delivered
recently after I passed my car driving test. A fortunate peruse
of eBay turned up one of the pair that was based at my local
station (Woking) that I've seen hundreds of times and I just had
       to have it.

The grin factor is huge, these Rapiers were some of the last
purpose built appliances, the success of the Dennis Dart bus led
to the end of production for factory capacity reasons. Currently
brigades have no choice now other than to convert a lorry
chassis which is a shame. Appliances seem to carry just about
everything nowadays and are a bit lardy being 18 tonnes gross,
back in the 90s the Rapier at 11 tonnes gross was deemed quite
adequate. Power comes from an 8.3 litres Cummins 6CTA mated to
an Allison world series auto. It's fast for a car, let alone a
       wagon. :smilewide:
It's got more gear on it than I can list, 1000 gallon per minute
pump, 6kW 110v generator for the hydraulic lighting mast,
portable pump, hoses, foam goo concentrate, 1800 litre water
tank, massive 135 ladder etc etc. and a fully functioning
electric winch under the bumper. Some training is needed I
think, and a cat 'C' licence. Honestly officer, I thought it was
       a bus... :toothless:

 chaps. You're right, it doesn't fit in my garage! On
the upside, as far as I know it needs nowt. The worse I've found
is a few rust bubbles on the doors starting to take hold, so it
won't get in the way of series projects. :giddy:

More to the point, will we be able to see it at the Basingrad
       Festival of Transport next year?

I fancied something a tad faster than a Land Rover fire
appliance strang. ;D I have no intention of trying it but
Rapiers are documented to have clocked 120mph. >Htlr<
There's a fairly dreadful video of mine getting some welly on an
       airfield here:

LGV theory and hazard perception booked Doug, if I haven't
passed the test by Blazingsmoke F of T time next year I'll
       deserve a slap.

Nice purchase Noel, I always had a soft spot for the Rapier and
the Sabre. It's sad that Dennis packed up making fire
appliances, I heard the split from Dennis Eagle was another
contributing factor as they made the cabs and required a minimum
number per year to be ordered that exceeded the demand
