knocking when breaking

Hi all
my 1975 series 3 diesel has developed a loud knocking/banging
sound when breaking, and the whole of the car juddering as if
being hit by a boulder, but not every time I break. I managed to
get this recreated at low speed whilst I was stood watching and
it looks like the front wheels are momentarily locking up when
breaking which is creating the knocking juddering, has any one
any initial ideas as to where I start to look for whats up.
cheers
carl

look at the props and see if a uj has gone may not be the brakes
at all. Give the ujs a good wiggle side to side and up and down.

Has it had new brake shoes recently?
Pull the wheels off and drums check lining has not come adrift
from shoe , if all looks ok chamfer the top edge of the front
shoe a bit more.
When the wheel is rotating if it can grab the shoe it gives a
self servo effect ie drum pushes shoe tight to braking surface.
Mine used to grab if it had been out in the rain have changed
shoes and now does not do that but has taken ages for new shoes
to bed in.

Checked props, no play up down or side to side, front one does
freely rotate about a quarter of a turn, is this excessive.

That rotation on front is normal as the drive is designed with a
form of dog clutch.

Hi,
Cracked brake drum?
Reminds me of the railway engineer who scrapped 2000 locomotive
wheels before he realised his hammer was cracked.
Many years ago I managed to dent a brake drum on a Ford Transit.
Caused dreadful juddering when breaking. I never did manage to
get the hub off the stub axle. Sold it with the judder.
