Replacing the 6cyl engine with a 4 cyl in a series 2a

Due to our lousy exchange rate my plan to rebiluld my 6cyl
engine has to be put on hold(very few parts are available here
in South Africa) is the 4 cyl engine a simple bolt in job or do
I have to move the engine mounts etc. I accept hoses will be a
problem but will this idea work as a short term solution. Can
anyone see any serious problems with this.

Not really.
Bellhousing is different - internals are the same.
Enginemounts needs modifying me thinks.

Gearbox crossmember on the 6cyl chassis is about 100mm further
back, if you move the crossmember forward it will be very close
to fouling on on the rear driveshaft where it goes through the
hole in the chassis. You would probably have to move the front
mounts 100 - 125mm back, or make up some sort of adaption mount.

Changed one or two from sixes to 2286's
Last one I bunged a regular 2a G/box, with normal 2286 fit
bellhousing, into the 6 chassis, as is.... The 6 cyl engine
mounts were cut off chassis....then mated the 2286 4 cyl engine
to G/box, ( still suspended from eng crane ) fine positioned
engine then trial fitted and tack welded engine mounts to
suit...fully welded the mounts when happy with everything's
relative position.
The engine thus, sits back in engine bay a few inches from
normal but this wasn't an issue, I modded some rad hoses to
suit, and in the this case I bodged a cable operated throttle (
using scrap Ford car bits ) which worked really well in the
event.
All this was in fact much easier to do than it sounds written
down, and all functioned fine, it was a really good motor
actually !

I did see a photo of a new Richards Chassis a few years back
with two sets of mounts, one set for a 4 and one set for a 6. If
you come across a scrap chassis it might be worth pinching the
mounts off it, that way it's easier to return to the 6 later if
you want to.

Hi,
I've never done it, but tend to agree that it will be easier to
move the engine mounts.
If you move the gearbox cross member, your propshafts will be
the wrong lengths, and the gear lever(s?) will poke up through
the special 6-pot transmission cover. Your exhaust will need
changing too, plus a lot of other fiddly stuff. Query if the
6-pot gearbox will marry up to a 4-pot clutch.
Me? I would look into making special engine mountings, to fit
between the two holes each side of the engine, and project
forward to meet the chassis brackets. Four inches might be too
much for a twisted cantilever bracket. ???
Sooner you than me.

Oddly enough I was looking at an 'ex 6' that's been converted to
4cyl 2286 yesterday ( they're wanting a bit of welding )
This one, like the ones I did, had also been achieved by simply
moving the engine ( & mounts ) back to meet everything else..it
really is the best & easiest way !

Thanks for all the info. I have bought a "new" 6 cyl engine that
has done +- 4000kms from new. It was fitted to a SANDF forward
control vehicle orderd for the Angolan war but never used. So
40yrs old and 4000ks on the clock. New oil seals sump and
timming cover gaskets, should be as good as new.
