Looking for a competent person / garage to refit & MOT

Hi everybody,
I own a series III 88
As the title suggests I am looking for a garage or competent
person to change my blown engine for a reconditioned one.

Oops sorry!
Yes hello everybody I am 100% new to the forum and I am just do
not know if I should find a nice engine 200/300 TDI to replace
the faulty one as it stands or simply break her?
There shall be other bits and bobs to do to prepare her for MOT
like replacing the propshafts for example.
I am just wondering what cost I am looking at to find a really
good 200/300 TDI lump and to carry out the engine change, new
props and then a mot.

Where are you, its quite important as your asking for
recommendations - no point someone in Scotland recomending a
garage if your in Cornwall
Your going to be gambling with an engine there 25years old now,
so probably best find one in a discovery you can see running ...
I would have thought something like £1k to supply and fit the
engine if its been converted already ... depends how well
thouhg, alot of them ive seen i doubt a garage would go near
they are wo badly done. then a few hundred quid for the rest

Anywhere close to the West Midlands / warwickshire would be
great.
I wish I had the land to facility a donar vehicle.
I am just wondering long term if I should take the plunge and
shell out for a new turner engine. 2.5k investment but I would
imagine better value long term?? Plus I could probably fit the
new engine / donar engine mysel?

You seem to have started several threads along the same theme so
I'll add my two penn'th here in one place.

These days I think the only safe place you'll find a good one is
in a running and driving Disco. There are plenty on eBay removed
already, but unless you gamble the seller is being truthful or
you get one of the rare types who'll let you drive the vehicle
before the engine is removed you'll be taking a chance.

An 88" series 3 with a knackered engine and iffy 'box? Not a
great deal. If you have money in it, as you seem to have,
breaking it won't get much back.

That's not my area so I can't comment.
In more general terms:
1) What engine do you have fitted at present that has 'blown
up'? A 2.25 petrol or 2.25 diesel?
If you have a 2.25 petrol then it's a no-brainer in my mind to
replace like with like. It's simple and a direct swap. No Tdi
is.
2) What thought process had led you to a Tdi?
If you have one fitted already then it's logical to want to
replace like with like. If this is an upgrade then I'd think
carefully. 200Tdi is an easier fit as you can use the existing
mountings, however having owned one in this config I'd want the
Disco mounts welded on, the vibration factor isn't funny. 300Tdi
may be more logical as there are more of them, parts supply is
better and if you are going to mess with the engine mounts then
it's no harder. Plus of course you'd have the easier 300
manifolds, intercooler etc. A decent, used Tdi of either version
is going to be £500, give or take. To convert it properly I
would think should cost £1000 on top for labour. That's a days
work for two blokes @ £50 per hour garage rate approximately.
3) Turner reconditioned engine
Without doubt an excellent unit, however expensive when compared
with other options. That's the sort of committment you make to a
vehicle you know is a keeper - perhaps slightly premature at
this point? It's worth noting if you are converting a series to
Tdi you will not get anything other than a stripped engine from
any reconditioners so all the ancillaries you'll need from a
donor vehicle, plus you'll need an exchange unit anyway.
4) Reconditioned gearbox
I'm not aware of anyone doing series 'boxes to an acceptable
standard these days. Again, sourcing a second hand unit may be
the best course of action. They're not difficult to change
providing you have the seat boxes out and buy/hire an engine
crane.
5) Cost
I'd be aiming to get these issues sorted and a ticket on the
thing for £1000. This assumes it isn't a rustbucket that needs a
weldathon and a 2.25 petrol engine. A pair of new props will be
yours for £114 delivered from Paddocks.

nitemare athome may be worth a pm if you do decide to pay
someoneto put a engine in, great at tdi conversions also if you
go that route, and local to you (birmingham)
